Default Engine Conversion & Noisy Fuel Pump

As you probably know due to my recent posts i've put the 2.0DOHC into a 1.8CVH sierra... anyway here's my problem.

As the 1.8CVH used the mechanical pump on the head and the 2.0DOHC uses an electrical pump i've had to fit a pump taken from a cavalier turbo. Thing is, i've put it in the engine bay for now but it's buzzing like a nutter, louder than the engine ..

Just want to know why this is?.. is it because it's so far away from the tank that it's finding it hard to "fill" the pump hence why it's a lot louder as it's not under as much load and pumping faster?

is it because i need one of those fuel damper things which i think the cavaliers are fitted with?

I don't think it's an electrical problem as it's driven off a relay so it's either on or off.

Any advice needed and appreciated before i start getting mank again under the car and start cutting fuel lines

there supposed to be submerged in the tank to keep noise down mate.
just fit a tank off a twincam sierra/saff.

well i presume so jim as it's the tank fitted with the 1.8CVH's which use a mechanical pump on the head of the engine?

fuel pump is just in the engine bay at the moment to make sure it all ran fine.. i'm currently tidying everything up now.

thanks sean. but the cavalier pump is fitted externally on the car i.e. out of the tank.

i'll probably get the tank from the dohc sierra, make life easier and it'll be more 'standard'..

just wondering why it was so loud.

thaught they were internal matey. it could be nackered i guess as they buzz but not that noisey.

i`d still fit the saffy tank/pump.

yours is a pre-90 sierra yeah?

just go down the scrappy n nick the pump+brackets from a 2.0 DOHC, or an XR4i, XR4x4 etc. etc. well, just about any injection sierra should do! (or get a NEW pump)

pumps buzz lots when theyre worn

well that's two pumps i've tried, i initially got one from the scrappy and it buzzed the same. I mate took that one to try as his car was running a tad lean and didn't solve the problem so he gave me his as it was easier that switching them again.

It's a '93 K plate sierra... i don't know which tank it has?!

Aye well i'll go to the scrappy shortly but in the meantime i'll just relocate the pump near the tank for now.

93 will have an internal fuel pump

whilst at the end of the day that pump youve got will work, its still best to get the proper pump (ie ford fitment!) also fuel pumps can fuckup when not left submersed in fuel, so its always reccomended to buy new, as if 2nd hand they can die whilst theyre off the car

well i spent the day moving the fuel pump next to the tank. I've got to say i done a nifty wee job!

Started the boy up and took it a little drive around and what would you know?.. a nice quiet fuel pump and no more hesitation on an near-empty tank.
