306 d turbos
Not a ford but im sure some people know about them
Thinking of getting one next month hopefully as my first car, would like some opinions on them if you have owned one, what to look out for ect.
I'll be doing a 50mile round trip to work 4-5 days a week when i pass my test, currently use the train which is shit and too expensive. Which is why im thinking of getting one.
Will have around £1800 to spend on one
I've had a quote of £1350 to insure as a named driver which i can live with for a year
Also seen on stu's website.... for £250
This is on autotrader for £1700;
Thanks for any advice

Great little cars. though strange @ recon engine at only 90k as they should go on for ages if looked after well.
I had T plate one and had no problems with it from 59k to 75k proper nice little car Just only thing that does my hea din with them is the French build quality, thin pannels and bit noisey but hey its French, still great fun car to drive and did not give me a minuite of trouble!

Ive had one in red, N reg and it was a damn good car, still is, no rust, good mpg, cheap to insure. I put a dump valve on mine had the boost and fuel upped, 17s, lowered, then sold it to my brother who has played with it a bit more and for a derv it goes like f*ck !!!! think he is selling it, with a boot full of stereo !!!!

personally i'd try and pick up a standard one
remember you will need to get requoted for the insurance when its chipped, and from experience with friends, chipped diesels arent cheap to insure
steer clear of that one, recon engine, shit wheels
you should be able to pick up a nice one for £1500, you may just have to wait as they dont come up for sale all that often, cos people hang onto them
i went in a chipped one, and wasnt all that impressed by the performance, but i havent driven one, and 306's are supposed to handle ace
good luck finding the right car, if someone on here has one for sale, it will probably be a goodun (or fooked from running on chip oil )

My brothers let go at 92k! Allegedly its a number 3 piston thing that lets go and a valave dropped right on the crown and fucked it big time! A mechanic mate said its a common thing on the older style engines to do this

I had one about 2 years ago....
Bought it for £1900 with 112k on it, lowered it, had exhaust made up for it, 17" rims, grooved discs etc etc, NEVER had ANY problems with it - serviced it a couple of times, handled absolutely superbly, wasnt the fastest thing in the world but was perfect for what I needed it for-a workhorse, sold it 18mths later with 135k on the clock for £1900 & as far as I know its still going down in london & is on about 165k now!!!
Things to look out for - dodgy door electrics i.e. elecy windows etc, rear bushes if its done over 100k, front drop links knocking, headgaskets. They do tend to smoke a little at start up, mine did ever since I bought it never caused any issues tho. Oh & theres a strange fault with some DHY engine codes I think where conrods sometimes make a bid for freedom out the side of the block - mine was DHY & it hasnt happened tho!!!
Great little cars, would have another anyday!!!
The older model you dont strictly 'chip' the cars - its all done mechanically to up the fueling & boost. Later HDI models are however chipped!!!

Lee R21turbo I agree with you regarding the phase 1s, i had the fuel and boost upped after i got a quote from the derv doctor and it was something like £140 with the vat but my mate and my bro had a fiddle with it and got it to 1.2 bar, but since then my bros and another fiddle and i think its pushing 1.5 bar now.

My sister has one too and it's a great handling little car and it's economical too. It's a little slow but after you've passed your test that's a good thing
I wouldn't buy a modified one myself because they are the type of car that new/young drivers are buying and they are often hammered to death, I'd buy a standard one and modify it.
Things to look out for are the electrics on the doors. The wires can get broken which means that the central locking can pack up and the electric windows.
There are plenty of upgrades out there for them My sister has a set of gti 6 cyclones for hers that I've refurbished in white, s16 front struts, springs, hubs, disks & calipers and an induction kit all to go on
Go for it, I think you'd like it She's on her 2nd and she loves it to bits.

Having a bit of fun in my TDi at a Crail circuit they handle well
I had the boost and fueling turned up by STU @ MSD, transformed the car , its nippy yet returns high 40's MPG.

Team HOTHOT!
Lovely motors when they work well
Today I've been under my mates (XR Craig on here) 306 D turbo changing the gearbox - what an absolute cunt of a job
Even having the car in a garae and using the 4 poster ramp helped little - never ever want to change the clutch or gearbox on one ever again

Pug diesel are great - 306 turbo d are top for the money!
One word of advice if you go and look at any pug diesel make sure the rad fans work. If they don't then it a good chance its been cooked at some point and that probably means head warping is likely!
And more importantly if its had a head gasket or any head work done walk the fuck away. From experience once a head gasket goes on a pug diesel that normally means the head has warped, even if you get then skimmed they seem to warped again within the few thousand miles!
Also make sure it has plently of water and does not dump the lot when you remove the cap when fully warmed up etc.
ps - if you want a real cheap bargain then get a 309 turbo diesel - looks pony but fooking cheap to buy on ebay. Mine cost £80, needed a diesel pump and has been driven like its been stolen for the last couple of years. Does 110mph no problem as well!

hopefully will buy a corsa b in the summer and turn it into a full on track car for abit of fun, so will need to be towed. probly isnt legal but will be fine until i get caught just wanted to know if they have the grunt to pull one.
this is another reason for going for a turbo diesel over say a 1.25 fiesta etc.
