Default Shit sounds on PC

What or how do I go about making my pc have better sound from the speakers. Is it just a sound card I need? .... any suggestions as I like playing music on it but its so low on volume. I've only got 2 silly plug in jobbies, would it be possible to hook it up to my Sony home cinema surround sound thingy?

chances are you pc has onboard sound, if its half decent pc it should have 6channel onboard sound so your sony setup should plug straight in with some wires(not sure what ones though?), but if your pc has extremely shit sound it wont be 6channel so you will hook the sony up and only get sound through 2 speakers, so you'd need a better sound card thats at least 5.1( if you want one i can show you links to a suitable one)

But yeah you can certainly hook the sony up mate but just depends what sound your pc currently has?

pete thats all very but if he has shit onboard sound theres no point going out buying any decent speakers plus he already has a decent setup that he could hook up.

Right i need to know what motherboard your pc has, to tell me this download this little programme http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html click on the top american flag and the download should start, its only a small programme dont worry, then on there somewhere you should be able to tell me what motherboard you have then i can find out exactly what sound your pc has and give you a definite answer

Its not a bad motherboard actually..............
9.60 in.(L) x 9.60 in.(W); Micro- ATX
• 4 DIMMs w/ DDR 400 upto 4 GB
• 1 PCI-E 16X; 3 PCI; 8 USB
6 Ch. Audio; 10/100 LAN; IEEE 1394; RAID; SATA; ATA133
• ATI Radeon Integrated Graphics, 1 x S-Video port, 1 x Composite TV-Out
• Live Update

Thats the bit we were after, so you can definatly run 5.1 sound on your pc, you just need the right cable(s) to hook the sony up, im sure someone will know what you need on here

forget onboard soundcards, theyre shit... all of them.

look at the soundblaster audiology range, you cant go wrong. and yes you can plug your soundcard into your decent hifi system, all you need is the right cable

jim he just wants "better sound" as he puts it, so connecting it to his sony surround will be more than enough for him.

If he said i want the best sound possible id have told him to get an aftermarket soundcard before installing all his sony gear

99% of people who have 6ch (5.1) outputs on their PC's soundcard will have 3.5mm jack plugs for each channel (tho many will have stereo jacks that do both L+r fronts, l+r rears, c+sub) so you need either mono jack to rca leads, of if your jack outputs do two speakers each, then you need stereo jacks to twin RCA's.....

Then you put the RCA ends into the 6ch input on the back of your AV amp and presto, you have surround sound from your pc, nicely amplified by the AV amp.

Of course, if you already have the 6ch inputs on your AV amp in use, then you will have a problem....

Personally, I had a bog standard 2ch onboard soundcard and a pair of normal PC speakers. Didn't like em so for Ł15 I bought a Trust digital surround sound soundcard (main PCI card with the 5.1 outputs on it, then a daughter board pci card with optical and coaxial outputs and inputs) and connected my PC to my hifi using optical cable. Still only have 2ch stereo, but then I don't use my PC for surround sound playback (thats what the big ass TV and expensive DVD player, AV amp and Mission speakers are for!) and all I really use the PC for (sound wise) is MP3's, which are stereo anyway...... But it sounds fookin ace, and my hifi has decent amplification so it is loud and bassy
