with any cams more than BD10 the pistons must be pocketed. NOT TRUE
Why the obsession with bhp? your car might make 400bhp but be about as drivable as a squashed slug!

and how do you know any 400bhp cos is driveable? it was a generalisation.
its likely it'll drive very well, but you know about most of the bigger power japcars that have been tuned in japan only have a narrow power band

what does driveable mean....??? i've got a 420 bhp (well lane rollers...
) it's on standard head/cams 7.5:1 and i think it's easyer to drive round town due to the fact that the turbo comes in a bit later...dont mean to sound like a tart but even our lass likes it better now...she knows when it gets above 3000rpm it's going to get scarey.... and when people say ooo isn't it a bit lagy...no.....just change gear

In respect of the second part of the question, I know where you are coming from, but this was kinda the point of the thread - to make a 400bhp engine that would do the job well, not just do the job. This is the primary reluctance to dropping the comp ratio.
A number here have posted that their low comp cars still drive well throughout which is interesting - this is turning out to be a very good thread - comparing each spec helps to see the pattern of similarities.

a standard spec engine is good enough easy for 350 bhp.

AGAIN NOT TRUE
Im going on what i was told by not just Karl. I find that a bit strange as with the correct set up you COULD see 400 bhp
and how do you know any 400bhp cos is driveable? I had that set up running on L8 with T34 63 running 30psi and all component were standard and HAD no problems!

same as mate did an engine for my mate, totally standard bottom end with t34.63 ported head, pair of bd10's, greys made 412 bhp with no probs

Mine was 8.6:1, with std 200 bottom, just lightened and balanced, long studded, and Arp rod bolts. worked head, and cams.
Gt30, 504bhp and 447 lb/ft on IES engine dyno.
I dont see the piont of dropping the C/R below 7.8:1 on 450 bhp motors.

saying that,, i dont mind ringing the guts from an engine
Std comp for upto 700bhp.....WRC long studded linered block eec4 block,wrc 4 layer gasket,CP or forged cossie racing pistons pocketed,crank on std grind,shot peened std rods,grp a bolts,grp a cam belt,vernier cam pulleys,bd16 in bd14 out cams,grp a ported head,4 x 1000cc injectors...then add suitable turbo/inlet manifold for bhp...see karl norris for a map on a L8 ecu job done.
400bhp......T34.63 with std inlet cover
450bhp......T38 with 4x4 inlet cover
500bhp..... T4 with EEC4 inlet cover
550bhp.......GT30 with swedish plenum
630bhp.....GT35 with swedish plenum
700bhp.....GT40 with swedish plenum
...obviously the higher the bhp the quicker the wear rate.

mine ran 7.56:1 on a t34 .63 at 34psi peak and the difference from its previous stg1 engine? (completely std engine on stg1 chip, exhaust and air filter) was that it felt......................the bloody same off boost!i THINK the turbo spooled all of a couple of hundred rpm later, the only REAL difference in them was the MASSIVE bang the turbo gave when it came in on the 400bhp spec, other than that it was just as good around town etc...and had a FAR larger power band than my curreent NA e36 bmw 325i!
