I dont know where the filter is, but if its one under the bonnet then did you fill it with diesel as well? It has to fill up so fuel is getting to the injectors before it will start.
Priming it like Constina mentioned above will do it if you have a hand pump on it.

might also be an air lock in the injectors, if priming it like said above fails to get it started loosen off one of the injector unions and crank it until diesel comes out, and then while still cranking it over nip it back up to make sure there is no air re-entering the system

did you fill the filter with diesel before fitting? if not you will be cranking for ages lol, take it off fill with diesel
you will more than likely have to crank off an ijector too now to release air

yep.you need to fill the filter with diesel before you try and start it. you might need easystart now though as there will be air in the system after the filter.

I think this is the same engine that runs in the Volvo S40/V50, if so we have a hand pump at work (Volvo) which you have to use to re prime it up. It attatches on the pipe from the filter to the rail. Its a right twat but needs to be done or it wont start.

just fill the filter with diesel, slacken an injectorat inlet and crank the fooker over to get the air out, do all 4 injectors prob dont all need doing but might aswell, tighten and hopefully the fooker will start
also make sure filter is fitted correctly or you will be drawing in air and thats not good
