www.scan.co.uk They sell proper components rather than the cheap shite ebuyer sell.

If you want a proper fast system pre built, go to www.alienware.co.uk

yes i like the gaming side of things, but on my current (well now x-setup) i only had a 128 GC, 512mb Ram etc and love playing BF2, but can only run med graphics at best, so would like to run full graphics to make the most of my huge TFT.

but i dont expect it be be megga megga top spec as there like 2-3k

Ryan from scan site:

Intel Core Duo 2, 6700 Ł354

2 Gb Corsair PC5300 DDR2 Ł170

MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition i975X Ł121

Good Starting basis for a top end system, add in a decent power supply and a 7950 gx2 1GB graphic card and your away.

I've used scan.co.uk several times for loadsa bits over the years and always found their prices keen and service prompt. Recommendation from me.

Go for one of the slower core duo chips then and a 512mb graphic card. Any Intel Core duo2 chip is faster than anything AMD can offer you. A 6400 core 2 duo is Ł152 or the 6600 is Ł210.

A 400GB Hard Drive is around Ł90 with a 250gb at around Ł50. DVD writers start at around Ł25 quid.

Agreed, I've spent a few grand in there over the years, and it's helpful living two junctions down the M61 from them, so I don't have to pay delivery charges!

Given the spec of the rest of the system, I don't think much of their choice of graphics cards...

I've got two "shopping lists" in work, for a new system (one AMD, one Intel - am veering towards Intel again, now), although both are slightly above your budget of Ł1k (Ł1,188 for the Intel, Ł1,150 for the AMD). Plus, you'd have to build them......I don't buy pre-built systems, although I probably should as they're a bit less stressful!

Case: Enermax CS-527 Black Midi = Ł35.24
PSU: 535W Enermax FMA SLi EG565AX = Ł62.15
Motherboard: Abit KN9 Ultra = Ł78.71
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core = Ł280.36
RAM: 2Gb (2X1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 = Ł214.60
HDD: 200 Gb Seagate ST3200820AS Barracuda 7200 = Ł50.72
GFX: 256MB Gainward 7950GT (580/1500) = Ł187.75
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme (OEM) = Ł53.92
DVD-ROM: Sony (black) 16xDVD-ROM 48xCD-ROM = Ł11.74
DVD-Wri: Sony AW-G170AB2 Black 18x DVDąRW x12 Ram Dual Layer = Ł20.72
FDD: Mitsumi FA-401 USB2 1.44 Black Floppy with 7 in 1 Card Reader = Ł19.96

There's normally something I forget, but that looks like the lot......total price = Ł1,015.87 (just over budget - swap the FDD with card-reader for a normal FDD, if you don't need the card-reader bit). Oh, and all of that's from Scan, so unless you lived close, you'd need to tag delivery on top of that......if so, to get it under budget, drop the CPU to the next one down (Ł50-60 cheaper for the AMD64 X2 5000+ dual-core chip).

For the price of two 256MG 7600GS cards and an SLi-ready motherboard, it could be "downgraded" to a decent (but non-SLi) motherboard, and a 512MB 7900GT (I'd rate that higher than two SLi'd 7600GS cards, but I guess you'd need to benchmark them together for the official verdict).
