its when you have far too many cars,....like phillis, and end up using parts of them in the house,....in this case,,..a diff to hold down carpet.....

compact and "progressive in action"

used to replace none lsd diff,....
used in rally due to extensive set up,...and good for 600 hp depending on setup
oh,...and no torque steer

i thought it is a plated unit as opposed to a geared or viscous one, could be wrong

basically you can adjust the amount of "lock" you want, and by lock i mean how much easier one wheels turns faster than the other

i have a 7.5" r+d plated diff and i seem to remember it is set at 80nm, which means....

a) i cant puch the car with the wheels turned
b) the car judders when you set off out of t junctions with the outside wheel trying to tranmp
c) have a fucking awesome piece of kit that is rated to over 400lb/ft that has transformed how the car handles

highly recommended

PS transmission isnt hp rated, its torque rated!

Basically its a plated diff.

Rather than the wank viscous one Cossies come with.

Can change the plates and how they set to adjust the amount of lock at various times, ie when accelerating, decelerating, and just coasting.

Can pump up viscous ones to have a lot less slip too, but then they turn into barely more than a welded diff if you pump it up to a decent amount of lock.

A lot of aftermarket plated diffs set for road use are set really "safe" anyhow, no not loads of lock, but still FAR better than standard LSDs.

And yes, the bits are usually way stronger so break a lot less!

Plated diffs need regular maintainance tho, esp when set to work properly (ie not all safe for road use), oil changes v.regular mainly, but gotta be prepared to get it overhauled fairly often to keep it as good as it ever was.

Viscous on the other hand stays pretty similar (ie crap ) no matter what.

You could, as long as its in the rear, not the front.
2wd or 4wd.

Wont help it go sideways as such, but a decent diff will help you HOLD it sideways way better. (apart from a quaife ATB diff, which will make it harder to hold sideways if anything)

Well even with a RWD car, its WAY easier with a proper diff, standard LSDs are nearly as shit as open ones.

ATBs make it harder as they automatically take the power AWAY from the wheel with the least resistance (ie the spinning one, or the one spinning fastest) so its constantly trying to drag itself straight.
Wheras to be in control properly when holding a drift you want them as good as locked, like what a decent plated diff will do.
ATBs are great and safe, but if you WANT to act like a hoon, theyl not help you.

Weldeds best bet mate, thats what I got, 50quid is a lot nicer on the pocket than 600+ too, and zero maintainance

can't beat welded diffs for sideways fun , if you really want to go to town fill it with exhaust brackets between the teeth as well , just like my brothers 528i No way in the world that will EVER break
