BIG Money cosworths
just reading an article on rebuilds etc and it got me thinking about the other half's current rebuild!!
whilst I love my car, there is no way on this earth I could warrant spending anything over 10k on it. I know over time I probably will, but to lay that out say over 3-4 month period is just ludicrous surely!!!
I know it gives you a buzz when you drive it, but seriously, what will you get out of it at the end of the day??? Your never going to get that money back whether you sell it or smash it up????
I personally woudnt even dream about spending my savings on it and definiately wouldnt get into credit card/loan debt to do it! Would rather spend it on something that will get my money back in the future!
So - the point is - what was your reason for spending however much you have done on your car?? (apart from the sad gits who will say "i want to be faster than him/her" )

i only spend money on it i can afford to lose.
I.e i would never make myself skint and never put my car before certain priorties.
I enjoy spending money on my car, in the same way women like shoe and handbags.
just on a much larger scale

I'm into my Sierra for A FOOKING LOAD more than I paid for my Skyline as well
Skyline may be for sale actually if you are interested? I know you said you might be. I've seen a GT2 I fancy.
I think you can spend what you want. Its only money, can't take it with you. But Sinking it into shonky old Fords is a bit of a weird one and I wonder why we do it sometimes BUT they are very very very fast for relatively little money I suppose!
Anyhow as long as you don't get into debt doing it and your family don't go hungry or without anything they need then I reckon party on and enjoy! however I do wonder when people spend alot on their cars and nothing on where they live
Some people also need to have reality checks and stop pouring endless cash into their cars and just buy something better in the first place *cough* JIM GALBALLY *cough*

To replicate Martin's car would take at least Ł60-70k if you were to pay him to do it - don't forget he doesn't charge himself labour, but you're looking at the best part of Ł30k in parts alone .
There are plenty of Ł40k+ Escorts out there already (parts and labour) - I know of at LEAST three off the top of my head without having to think hard...

ohhhhhh Porkie - how come you wait til I get a cossie THEN decide to get rid Going to have to give it a miss though as I have something a bit un-usual in mind for the next car now, but thank you for letting me know
Ł40k+ - honestly I just cant understand why you would spend it on a car. Like i say I love em and I know the thrill of a race is great, but it's just like giving it away!!
60k-70k
HOWEVER - if i won the lottery I have said that i'd get my cossie totally restored and big power engine and I probably wouldnt think twice about spending that!!

it depends largely on how well my next house developement goes.
as after i've done my next venture i'm hopefully pretty much morgage free, so i can look at a nice car, unless i see a nice house that involves a morage.

Dunno where I go on this thread...
But after spending SHIT loads on my old Series 2's and then Buying Tims old car only to spend more money on it etc I decided enough was enough.
Sold it and got a sensible car- Golf VR6- lasted 2 weeks and I sold it.
Since then I have searched for a good base to build from.
Did that and then realised how much money it would cost.
So I went and got my new Saph- has ALL the right bits and bobs on, ALL the hard work is done and to be honest I NEED to spend nothing.
Price for that 8k- which when you think about it is a lot of money for an old Sierra- but then go and find another car which will beat it for less money or the same- that isn't an old Sierra.
(without using industry contacts+ insure it)
You cant- or I would have done it.
I paid Cash for my car, no loans or owt No credit cards or anything.
I will not even consider going into debt for it- if it breaks it will stay broken untill I can afford to fix it- and if I feel that day wont realisticaly come I will break the car and cut my losses.
There are more important things in life- cars are just a part of mine and always will be to an extent but I've given up getting stressed or being remotly bothered by them anymore.

this is how i see it................ right i wanted a new car, always wanted a escos but my mates were saying get a e46 m3, evo 8(at the time) impreza sti8 or whatever. so if i had spent Ł42k on a m3, Ł28/30k on a jap car it would be now sitting in my garage worth at least Ł15k less than what i paid for it which is the amount i paid for the escos.(which is probably still worth 15k now.) yes i know you can spend money on them but most of the time to spend on them is a luxury and upto the individual.sometimes the engines can give way yes but if it costs 2/3k to put right thats still alot less than any money you are gonna loss on another vehicle you buy in about twelve months!! you cant expect to own a car and not have runnunig cost or breakdown costs once i a while. surely the fact that a cosworth doesnt really depreciate in value makes up for the money you would lose in buying a different kind of car. the way i see it is its six of one and half a dozen of the other. people get years of motoring out of the likes of escos for next to nothing(suppose if depends if you drive like a cunt really or generally just abuse it) and on resale get there money back or even make a profit.

Porkie - to be honest I have fallen in love with the GT500 thats just or is about to come out in USA (On the cover of Top Gear mag this month)
So, i've set myself 5 years to do everything necessary to get one shipped over here. Its something different and its caught my eye, so fingers crossed x it'll come through for me.
I do still still love skylines, but think they seem to be getting very common on the local roads and therefore I want to be a little different

thats actually not a bad price Mike. I take it that is purely the engine though and not the running gear like clutchs and suspension?????

I dont care on the cost as such.
What I do is build cars to a stage where its still a LOT cheaper than buying a different but standard (or different, but modded) car of the same performance.
Dont understand the people who spend twice Cossie money on their RST just to get it as quick as a 270bhp Saff Cossie.
Or the same sorta thing with these 24 valvers, ahem... Jim, JonnyB, etc etc.
Dont mod cars cause I wanna, and dont give a flying fuck about being the fastest type of whatever car, do it cause its the CHEAPEST way to get the performance I want.

I was an idiot.
Like a lot of people at that age I
a: suffered far too much status anxiety
b: had a terrible attitude towards money
Back then I could have justified it all day long too. I'd be the same now if it wasn't for my redundancy.

I bought my Escort Cossie for the fact i hoped it would not lose too much money when / if i came to sell it and the fact that are rather exclusive...now i know why
I paid 17k for my Cossie and it now stands me in 38k
But, i haven't got myself into debt with it, i wouldnt be doing that, i just cant stop buying crap for it which i never use
