Yo Mark
I've used my 4x4 tube and stick with a 2wd sump for the E30.
Filled the filter, and fitted that, then put 3.5 litres of oil into the engine, and the level on the dipper is at the top mark perfectly
No difference it would seem

Have you got the tube the right way up? The 2wd tube is the same diameter all the way up so you could get it upside down. The fit in the block is a bit loose so you need a top bracket.
