Default Mountain bikers, help me with forks please

ive got a specialized rockhopper with manitou axel elite forks on and theyre gash. Ive been told the best forks on a budget are Marzocchi MX comps, ive read some stuff on them and they get a good review.

but theres so many different options with them and variations. can someone recommend the best model etc to go for, or even better anyon have any to sell

Cheers.

i only posted asking for some advice as i knew theres a few people on here that know their stuff. if you want to jump on the post straight away and take the piss thats fine by me, it happens on nearly everything anyone posts on here, i honestly dont mind at all i like a laugh.

but my sense of humour is to say i hope you get skullfucked by an alsatian, or i hope your next shits a hedgehog. its not harsh at all, its purely a joke so if youre gonna mess peoples posts up ecpect a bit of pisstaking back

MX Comp's are waaaaaaaay better than any RST.

I'd personally avoid Pace unless you want to be always fixing them - Pace do their R&D on punters!

You wont go wrong with any Marzocchi fork, and Fox are simply the nuts

Manitou are worth a look in as well

Neil.

A nice set of old School Rock Shox Mag 21's or Pace RC-35's. Spose they're a bit poo now compared to the new stuff

Both are utter wank compared to the newer forks.....in fact they couldnt be more wank if they specifically made them to be shit

Depending on budget go for whatever Marzocchi Bombers you can afford avoid the dirtjump ones unless you do dirtjumping...lol If you can afford it go for some fox ones, similar performance to Marzocchi but slightly lighter...botha re indestructable to the normal rider.

I'd avaoid any other brand simply because i've destroyed forks from all of them and my Marzocchi's have neverr ever let me down, I recently sold an origional set of z1 bombers from 1996, the very first ones and they were still as sweet as a nut, stiff and 100mm of plush controllable adjustable travel

I currently run Marzocchi All Mountain 2's (2005) all the fork you'll need IMO

My Mag 21's done me proud when I raced. Saying that though that was 1994

My biking fun came to an end when a dippy bint knocked me off my road bike when I was out training

Ok cheers for the replies, im sold on the Marzocchi Bombers and the mx comps seems to get a really good write up. so its basically just the newer the model the better really then.

gonna have a look on ebay and see if anywhere is having sales on 2005 models and compare.

Cheers

Meanwhile back in the real world.................

If you can afford it I'd got for Fox F100 RLC. Awesome damping, very stiff and pretty light. I also rate the Rockshox Reba Team. It doesnt have the Fox lifespan (seals arent as good) but I think the damping is actually better than the Fox and it felt jsut as stiff.

The type of riding I do is called 'All mountain' these days. Drop offs, fast rough downhill and XC - So thats what I'd recommend those for.

Check out MTBR.com for some other reviews from buyers.

I run 50mm (I think ) travel Marzocchi's on my Kona, and never had a problem with them. Fully adjustable etc - they were about £250 odd. Never skipped a beat but as I said, PM BoXXer.

whatever you do, DO NOT buy manitous. i cant stress to you how SHIT they really are. they flex like fook, leak on any occasion possible, and not to mention the U.K importers, RAW, have just gone bust so parts are not available at the mo. Specialized used manitou for ONE year, and have now gone back to Rockshox as they had so many warranty returns.

Bombers are easily the best value for money, rockshox are pretty good, but flexy, and Fox are easily the best you can buy, but that depends on your budget really.

HTH

boXXer, it looks like i picked the wrong year to buy my specialized then, the axel elites i have are terrible. theyre too soft, bottom out easily and the preload adjuster broke straight away. wish id done something about it now and sent them back.

What im worried about is buying another fork and finding theyre too soft for me or bottom out just the same. ive no idea where to start with the travel on them is it false economy to buy say an 02, 03, 04 set of bombers from ebay ?

nacnac at those forks, theyre worth more than my car,lol

Cheers

if you find the fork too soft, you can raise oil heights and change springs if you want to. there is always a way to fine tune a fork. As a rule, they come with medium springs from the factory anyway. i would go for a 100-120mm fork for yours.

sorry to keep asking questions, i did see a 'firm ride kit' advertised for my forks, is it worth it or shall i just bite the bullet and upgrade.

its a real hard choice without being in the know, the rock shox tora mark suggests look to be pretty good, yet ive read so many good things about about the marzocchi mx comps.

if i decide to go for the mx comps, and look about on ebay does it matter what year forks i get ? or would you recommend buying them new.

cheers again

XR-RS - I was commenting on the waffle about the AVO coilovers.

The old Rockshox used to be pretty flexi but they upped their game in 2005 with the new Reba range. If you do any significant road mileage or like to ride out of the saddle then go for a lock-out. I dont bother with the remote lock-out myself as its so easy to reach down and turn the dial.

Fox customer service is 2nd to none. My Fork was over a year old and had done 1800miles of pretty mental terrain and they took it back and gave it a full rebuild for free! About to build the bike back up and see how much of an improvement it is.

I work with a semi pro biker and he said that fox have the market place
at the moment but Rock shocks have upped there game
due to loss of sales to Fox and Marzocchi,

I had marzocchi come on my bike when i bought it (good forks)
but i needed lock-out due to a lot of road use

Can't really comment on the new range of marzocchis but the way the bike rides with the new Rock Shocks is amazing and they are
only a run of the mill model fork

I would recomend them to anyone

hope this helps
