I'm not going to be moving quite yet but we have a 4 bedroom semi with a garage on a private estate worth around £210,000, been in this house for nearly 10 yrs so time to move to something bigger & detached with a double garage in the near future.
My wife has her office based at home & travels into London or milton keynes once or twice a week for meetings & i am a BT engineer so it doesn't really matter where we move as long as its no more than 2hrs or so from London by train, she can work from home & i just transfer to a new patch.
The thing is where we live Kent is very expensive, been looking at houses upto £300,000 max & where we live you could just about get a 4 bed with double garage but it will be a new build on an estate with a poxy little garden. If you want rural or a bit of ground round you for £300,000 your only get a 2 bed bungalow thats falling down
or maybe something that needs a lot of work or another semi detached.
Went through several areas last night on line looking at houses & it seems to me that the cheapest place within 2 hrs by train to London to live is Norfolk, for £250 - £300,000 you can get some very nice 4 bed properties rural with nice big gardens that aren't overlooked by any neighbours. I can't believe what you can get for your money in that area. The area's that interest me more are around Downham market,Swaffham,Wisbech. Why are they so cheap & their seems to be no shortage of nice rural /village houses set in good grounds, you would never buy anything like that where we are for £300,000.

Hi Simon,
That part of the county is so cheap, because it is pretty much cut off from the rest of the world with connections to anywhere down south.
If you want a 2 hour commute to London, you'll have to be near Norwich or Diss (South Norfolk). Also One Railways are not the most reliable

I live in doncaster and is only an hour and 40 minutes to london on train and is a major station.
We have a 5 bedroom bungalow and half acrce back garden and it is valued at 345, parking for 16 cars etc so you can get a lot for your money round here with excellent links, plus a brand new international airport has recently opened.
Just a thought.

All the large properties set in say 3/4 of an acre or so plot under 300k are in the sticks, are places near & around Downham Market a bit dodgy because that seems to be where its cheaper, where's the nearest train st to there for London ?

you can get the train to london from downham
it's a bit of a chav town though, but where isn't these days?
swaffham, like most places these days, had the railway taken out years ago.
generally, it's a nice area to live. there's not much to do, but if you've got a nice property and a car you'll be alright. not far to the coast. the flatness and remoteness can be either a good thing or a bad.

Blimey some of you make it sound like if i move there i'm going to expect to get my cossie knicked & house broken into by the local chav's. Is it really that bad ? I was under the impression that it was a nice rural country bumpkin area.

Hey dont listen to them, Norwich is a nice place.
When I drive through places like Leicester and Birmingham I realise how lucky we are to be in Norwich.
Its a top place just a bit far to get to anywhere, if you can cope with that then it would be a nice place to be

Thetford is a shit hole, i live 2 miles from it in the middle of the forest, however there are some fantastic villages around me that are still close enough for trains etc, i can be at redbridge train station in 1hr worst case, you will get alot for your money in Thetford but as has been said it's full of Eastern Europeans.
Look at some surrounding villages though and you will be surpised, I.E Culford, Icklingham, even the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds
Cheers Mike
