few things to check mate as said uj ,also check the steering column bush and also the ignition switch too .... also maybe a bent rack

maybe also worth checking the pumps efficiency too!!! may only be pumping at low pressure

Won't be bushes, my bet is bent rack, or needing serious overhaul, ie piston seal leaking.

you need to take the uj off under the bonnet, drown it in penetrating oil and then work some high temp grease into it. Also replace the plastic bush that goes through the bulkhead. Mine was exactly the same, been ok for about 3 years now though after doing that.

As we NOW know that it was ok prior to being parked up for 8 weeks, it obviously won't be a bent rack, I don't think it's going to be the UJ, but it's free so worth a go lubing before moving on to other things.
You could dispense with power steering altogether if you wanted and go for a 2.2:1 quick rack manual(std 2wd cossie is 2.56:1), I've just installed this into Roosies manual rack housing, this will then need a smaller splined joint, but mk3 fiesta non power joint can be used.

Don't know as engine out of car, under bonnet has just been painted, it will of course be heavy at slow parking type speeds but not a problem, just got to weld and make up a steering link now, fit hydraulic clutch and sequential gearbox!!

So did he, but he got withdrawal symptoms!!
It's a good job Kayleigh doesn't know what he spends on it, otherwise he'd need to top up his health insurance!!
The 3 door is going to be a 100% dedicated track car, and running twin side exit pipes.

The sapphs going to be a road only car, but no doubt he will do some track days in it, he also has a SAXO(chav) beemer 330d, motorhome, transit van, as well as his 3 door and sapph.
He's got too much to do and not enough time, the usual problem for most!!

Hi mate's

The steering from my cos 4x4 is also stiff.
I read this topic but realy don't know what you mean with UJ.

Can somebody please explain what a UJ is? My English isn't as good as I want it to be.

Thanks!

the uj is the wobbly part that connects the rack to the column

It means Universal Joint - as above, it's the flexible part at the bottom end of the steering column inside the engine bay that bolts to the steering column at the top, and to the steering rack at the bottom.

My rubber bush in my UJ shat itself, so replaced with a eurathene one from Superflex - from the MK1 Escort kit. Had to buy a couple of different nylock bolts to make it fit my 2wd Saff. Plus changed the steering column bush at the same time. It's gonna be glorious when I get to drive it again. Been off the road for 11 months and counting. Sadness

Superflex now supply a dedicated 2wd cossie flexy bit in 10mm poly, cost £45 in uk, superflex don't make any bushes, they are made by Pro Sport in austrailia.
I do know there is soon to be another uk supplier offering the same bit substantially cheaper, as well as other cossie parts.
