Default T5 Gearbox

The guy who installed my gearbox says he forgot to mention that a considerable amount of oil spilled out when he installed it. (Lucky I haven't driven the car yet).

Could this be the reason the gearbox chatters on idle (disappears when clutch is pressed in).

How many litres of gearbox oil does the box hold ???

Cheers

t5 holds 2.5 or 2.6l (cant remember which) of atf dexron 3 or some use 75/90 gear oil

as for the chattering as you describe, that wouldnt be caused by low oil IMO

it could be the input shaft bearing, easy to change but box out i'm afraid

Yeah we've discussed that it could be the input shaft bearing before eh mate !! Was just hoping it could be something stupid like the low oil level before having to rip it all apart.

I've now got a replacement box, so I may have a go at fixing it myself (God help me).

The gearbox manual states you need a special tool to fit the replacement bearing, is this correct or just a load of Ford Bo##ocks ??

Just a quick update...

I finally got the chance to jack the car up and sort the gearbox out today. Work and family commitments has meant that I've never really had the chance to plod on with the project.

The reason the gearbox was chattering it's nuts off was purely down to the lack of oil !!! Thank god it was nothing mechanical.

Oh well, on to the next stage and fit a replacement ABS pump.

The 5th gear can be so tight on the shaft that it breaks trying to remove it, sometimes even with heat and a puller.
