Default Engine guru's PLEASE HELP...........

My mate has a 4x4 H Plate Saff and is is real need of some help......

He's had the engine rebuilt, stage 3, breather etc etc

His cars is smoking but symptoms to me are strange...

If you rev it when stationary it smokes
if you start it...NO smoke
If you drive it underload... NO smoke
If you let over run...NO smoke
If you re-apply throttle... IT Smokes

The car is collecting oil in the plenum and collecting around No4 piston!!??

The car also breathes fairly heavey.

The car seems to drink fuel.

The smoke is more bluey than black

Its been checked for mapping.... FINE

Its had a brand new Turbo.

He's checked compression and ALL OK

Leak tested and ALL OK

He's stumped!?? and i cant help him, so i thought i'd ask for him, due to him not been into the t'internet

Any help appreciated

did it have new guides or valve stem seals?

Take the inlet manifold off and look at the inlet ports around the valve giude, I have seen some engines that have had new giudes and its been leaking oil down the outside of the giudes.

would that collect in the plenum and cause the same symtoms under the conditions ive said?

He told me that the guides were oversized?

But what about the excessive fuel?

Who checked the fueling and how,
What were the bore clearances,
The giudes could have damaged the head/giude as it went in, I have seen this often.

A leak down test only shows what sealing and how much, it cant show giude problems.

Oil in the plenum is usually down to turbo.I,ve had this on mine found the turbo was leaking from the compressor into cooler and getting into plenum

Only way was to clean everything big job but worth it

You say its collecting around no 4 at the top? looking in around the spark plug hole or inside the bore? if the first around the hole its the cover gasket failed if the bore seems like the guides as Mark has suggested

Remember any oil in the combustion cycle will cause det so be carefull

Let us all know how u get on
