Default ABS 3 door, saphire 4X4 and XR4 what is the difference if an

I am looking for an ABS system for my 3 door... what is the difference in ABS units across the 3 doors, saphire and I guess even Escorts.
Are the servo units , ECU and sensors, interchangable....

Any help much appreciated...

From microcat

Front

2wd to 93 part no 6173449
4wd to 93 6175345
cosworth 2wd to 90 1654336
cosworth 4wd 90 - 93 6175345

Rear

2wd to 93 6173450
4wd to 93 1640893
all cosworths to 93 6173450

The abs ecu's aren't interchangeable between 2wd and 4wd and I think the servo units etc are different as well. The XR 4x4 ones you can interchange with the Cosworth 4x4 I believe

2wd and 4wd aren't interchangeable, it's something to do with not locking the fronts up too much and there is an extra relay in the system too
the 3 door cars have a different loom as well as different warning lights in the dash

and don't forget that some cars had integral valve blocks and some had them on the other side of the engine bay

Thanks for the information guys. It helps a lot.
I have a few questions after reading your replies.
Stevetoon what are the part numbers referencing, the front and rear is the sensors is that right?
The servo and ecu are common across 2wd 3door and saphire, correct?
Do I have to use a valve block or could I run the lines direct, I read in the manual that only RHD sierras had the valve block which I assume is to route to servo without new lines?
Is there anything specific in sensors to look for, as in are thier extra bits to add on to the hub/ caliper?
I assume the Escort RS Cosworth are the same as 4X4 versions, can I connect Escort calipers to 2WD sensors?
And just my luck the only person I have a reply from on parts had a 4WD

I also noticed in my manual that it appears that there is a seperate loom for the abs, is that just in the diagram?, I would prefer not to replace my loom. Are these available seperately? Is there a wiring diagram and connectors / kit available to make it up?

no, seperate ecu for the 3 door, the 2wd saph and the 4wd saph and later escos cars

you need to match the ecu with the loom with the abs units and valve block and sensors (later cars have different plugs on the ends)

you need to have abs hubs on the front, you can't fit it without
and on the rear you need abs wishbones (and then abs rear shafts)

yes and yes but the calipers have nothing to do with the sensors, you need to fit the hubs to get the abs to work, once fitted you can fit any caliper and it will work if the system is working

pain in the arse but you would need the whole caboodle, and i mean everything, the only thing that wouldn't fit your 3 door is the front hub assembly due to the offsets and the strut sizes

the abs loom is stand alone
you only need to power it from the fuse box (ignition switched) and feed it to the warning light

it sounds as if you are planning to retro fit abs to a car, your best bet is to go out and find yourself a late spec 92 sierra with abs fitted (you can get a ghia or a gls for peanuts nowadays) and as long as the abs works you can swap everything over, no problems at all

Thanks so much for the feedback, you know your stuff and I really appreciate your help.

Yes I am looking to retro the entire ABS system. I have not seen a ghia or gls advertised on ebay, is there a place you would recommend that would be able to supply one. I want to get one next week if possible.

I called an rsbreaker and they wanted 280GBP + loom cost for a saphire system which seemed high, I wonder if the cosworth name increased the price or if that is what I will have to pay.

Regards
Gavan

All Sierra Cosworth sensors on the rear are the same whether 3 door, 2wd Sapphire or 4wd Sapphire.

On the front the XR 4X4 are interchangeable with the Sierra Cosworth 4x4

you can also use the granada system if you are finding it tough to find a sierra
ALL granada's came fitted with abs as standard, but the sensors are rated differently as they have more sheilding on them to supres stuff
