I have been asked to look at a friends daily drive, it has a few problems !

Mondeo 2.0 LX estate y reg

The problem I am scratching my head over at the moment is all the dash board lights come on like they should at ignition but stay on unless the trip counter reset button is pressed! any ideas please? so he is driving along with this gaffer taped down!

The car runs fine though!

The only other problem is the brake light switch as failed, I don't think they are linked but I could be wrong!

It will be down to the cluster itself, I wouldnt think for a second everythings all of a sudden failed on the car! Do the gauges work okay?

yes but only sometimes

If you've got things like radio codes, alarm/immobilizer code then take the battery off for an hour or so then put it back on, the dash should reset and if its still doing it its probably a dodgy set of clocks.
