Default ST 155 TDCi - any good?

I'm on the look out for one of these and got about 5k budget. Any specific probs to look for and how do they handle high (over 100k) mileage as mostofo seem to have quite a few miles on them.

Cheers.

I looked at these as a replacement for my ST200 but after driving one decided against it. I found it to be relatively slow and not that exciting to dirve. They are prone to knocking the injectors and fuel rails out along with the Dual Mass FLywheel and clutch. When the DMF goes it normally takes the starter motor with it as the swarf gets into the starter and screws it.

I plumped to spend a little more and got a BMW 535D instead. Was looking at the 525/530D but drove a 535D and fell in love with power and delivery.

jimbo, I am not thay far away in Sittingbourne so if you fancied a drive in my 535d just let me know.

As said above, they have common issues but apart from that they are good cars.

If you consider how many are on the roads, then their failure rate may be in comparison to any other car. The early modern BMW 320D for example has a big problem with eating it's inlet flat into the engine causing Ł2K+ worth of damage so you pay your money and take your choice.

The facelift ones 2005+ (like mine) are less prone to injector failures and the DMF was revised apparently.

Last year at a PF rolling road day, I got 172bhp / 355lbft with just a decat and tuning box.

With 4 decent tyres you can attack the bends pretty well as it stays fairly flat as standard. The torque makes the odd overtake a doddle whilst still getting 50+mpg. Certainly makes my 80+ mile a day commute as well as the 800 mile round trip to see my kids.

And the diesel Mundaneo ST hasn't really dropped in value much over the last year : I could probably get back what I paid for it as they're in quite high demand.

I've a got an ST220 as a work car and love it but it only does 16mpg so I think the st tdci should have best of both worlds. Trouble is they seem to be holding their value quite well.

Do the st155s have a timing belt that needs changing or are they chain? Any other expensive service items I need to bear in mind? Cheers.

I paid 5k for my '05 plate, 102k miles, lovely car. I blanked the EGR and put a de cat on it pulls lovely and is fairly quick for the size of the car, it returns 49 mpg average, on a recent run to manchester and back, it returned 54.6 mpg!
The half leather is nice and mines got the factory fitted screens and dvd player making the ps2 i fitted a plug and play
thinking of getting a re map and front mount for it too!!

Do they handle high mileage well as going to view an 80k one over the weekend.

Also are all 2005 model the facelifted ones?

Cheers.

Think it got facelifted in 2006. Mine was an '06' reg and had all the chrome bits. Only problem weve had was the EGR valve & that was only Ł200 to replace (not from Fords). Its now on 71k.

I have a 2006 model. The car is ok, however does not handle as well as my Volvo S60 D5and not quite as quick or economical. However I like it and would recommend them for the money.

Had my 2007 performance blue ST Tdci Mondy just over a week now. LOVE IT. My wife has a Subaru Legacy and she thinks the Mondy is every bit as good to drive.

I started this thread back in may last year and got one in June. I ended up with a 2005 2.2 titanium x sport with full st body kit, st suspensiln and all the st features - basically an st badged as a titanium x. I've done 7k miles since and it's been faultless (touch wood) so far and love driving it. Can't recommend them highly enough.
