If you consider how many are on the roads, then their failure rate may be in comparison to any other car. The early modern BMW 320D for example has a big problem with eating it's inlet flat into the engine causing £2K+ worth of damage so you pay your money and take your choice.
The facelift ones 2005+ (like mine) are less prone to injector failures and the DMF was revised apparently.
Last year at a PF rolling road day, I got 172bhp / 355lbft with just a decat and tuning box.
With 4 decent tyres you can attack the bends pretty well as it stays fairly flat as standard. The torque makes the odd overtake a doddle whilst still getting 50+mpg. Certainly makes my 80+ mile a day commute as well as the 800 mile round trip to see my kids.
And the diesel Mundaneo ST hasn't really dropped in value much over the last year : I could probably get back what I paid for it as they're in quite high demand.
