1.6 zetec se engine
Hi guys
In my focus I have a 1.6 and I think it is the Zetec se engine. (Mk1 x reg)
This is my everyday car so not trying to get lots of power obviously. But im interested in knowing the limits of the engine. I heard the bottom ends are weaker than the Zetec s engine?
How much power can the engine internals take before major work (forging etc) is needed? Pistons, con rods etc. and also, are they similar to the Zetec s 1.6 engines in the Fiesta’s. I believe there are, just some small differences?
Cheers all.

You can get a racing puma intake manifold + induction kit and a decent exhaust manifold and stainless exhaust system to get it up to about 130Bhp or there abouts which is the same as the standard (blacktop) zetec. Ill bet piper will do you some cams too which could see upwards of 150Bhp (thats same as fiesta ST). Get the cat removed or replaced with a freer flowing 'sports cat' and you could see almost 170bhp but I wouldnt want to take it any further than that. Alternatively you could just chuck in a 2.0 out of anothr focus / mondeo and give it some forced induction. Theres over 200bhp without even thinking

Nice bit of info there, thank you.
Like say, more curious as to what the engine takes. 170ish being about high as you would want to go.
No one seems to want to turbo these. A good comprise on medium performance and economy? 180-200bhp I would imagine would be easily achievable, as long as the engine would take it.
Maybe not worth the money if doing it through a garage but if ability to do it DIY etc, feasible?
Seems a lot of people drive 1.6 Focuses, yet not a lot engine wise seems to be done, other than some t/b’s.

i see what your saying matey. i done a post on here last year asking a very similar question. i didnt want to change the engine or do anything drastic but apparently the 1.6 se dont respond to turbos very well and the money u spend u wont see much performance 4. dropping a 2.0 engine is apparently pretty easy and u have a lot more tuning potential. .. turbos etc. but if u d find any more information let us no b4 i spend lots of money on an rs engine lol

ur lookin at about 2-2.5k to get the 1.6 upto 140-150 bhp it would be more wise to spend a little bit extra and get a st170 lump put in for about 3-3.5k if u where addiment about keeping the car youve got.
but in all honesty u might aswell sell up and by a decent st170 for about 4.5k that way u will also be getting good breaks, suspension and that getrag 6 speed box

170bhp with new manifolds, system, cams and a sports cat?
You will see 170bhp with some throttle bodies and aftermarket management

im turbo charging my zetec se this yr.just gathering my bits to do the job.the zetec se 1600 blacktop is stronger than the zetec s.mine is a 2001 engine.with the right bits and pieces you could make a quick car on low boost.the pistons from the astra 1600 about 03 model fit the zetec engine and are surposed to be forged.this will drop the compression alot.i read alot of info on turbo sport and they say the zetec se engine responds really well to supercharging.alot of info and research is required though
