Default front mount intercooler help

right guys and gals. when i specced and built my engine i bought my upgraded raidator and chargecooler from rad tec who are local to me good product. now when the car was mapped it made 285 bhp but ric wood told me the car is still running too warm when pushed despite the upgrades. he said 300 is possible with lower temps from a big front mount intercooler and his mapping is bang on. my scangauge records normal temps of 104 its been upto 112. now when a front mount intercooler gets fitted you have to scrap the airbox and fit an induction kit, correst me if im wrong? im apprehensive because of the whole heatsoak thing. some people fit group a cossie cones and fit them up top. anyone offer any advise on the better option or has anyone got it done?

cheers in advance

Yep front mount intercooler = full removal of FRS airbox as pipework on both items is not compatible with one another (airbox blocks the front mount cooler to inlet pipework)

TBH if your car is the one i think it is (focus with FRS lump dropped in it) there are only 2 options for air filter location

1st which is standard on all FRS running Gen II, PiperX, etc is pointing down next to the passenger side wing/wheel lining up in front of the fog light on the FRS bumper - no reason for heatsoak to be an issue with this setup as filter is down in the wing away from engine

2nd is to get some custom pipework done & locate the filter behind the passenger side headlight & run some cooling pipework from (well remove) the passenger side foglight - have a look on Cochyn's posts/pics of his current Focus RS to get an idea of look of that setup - again with good ducting/cooling i dont see a problem with heatsoak

Thanks for your help bud. spoke to Rad tec yesterday will be getting there front mount intercooler. ive only had experience with k&n so if i have to buy an induction kit and scrap the airbox then i will buy their product i think. ive left the foglights out the FRS bumper on my car so may be able to get some ducting directly to it.
oh by the way i should of explained my cars the black focus with a FRS engine in fast ford a few months ago. There are some piks in the gallery. should of explained lol.

thanks again for the advice

Was looking at your avatar pic & thought i recognised it from a recent mag feature

At a guess the indiction kits on the pumaspeed site you've mentioned are the ones they've branded as "350/400bhp" kits?

Only reason i would be wary of those is a couple of owners on the RSOC with sub/circa 300bhp cars went for the "custom" induction kits & found after fitting car suffered from stalling issues & didnt run very well as air flow was not as good on the standard intake pipe - dont think anyone has had those issues with the gen II (apart from if the MAF sensor is broken)

Yeah K&N Gen II & as suggested by last poster also replace the standard intake hose with uprated silicone hose as will hold the gen II tighter than the standard Ford intake

Unless your car is running big power say 330bhp+ then i'd say stick with the gen II or a panel filter tbh which uses either the standard intake or uprate it for a direct replacement Roose silicone item

Those custom intakes were designed on bigger power cars with bigger turbo, custom engine mapping, etc & imo are not suited to standard turbo setup with minor mods

As replied on the thread on RSOC the roose intake hose can be bought seperate if you give them a call & order - for some reason its not listed as a seperate item on their website

I wouldnt bother with a filter for an rs, over priced and you can make a better looking and more efficiant one. Just look at my project threads, pick what you want and ill price bits up for you

well as above mate changing form an upgraded chargecooler to a font mount intercooler from radtec already got that on order
so only thing ive found is a gen 2 or a viper but a viper doesnt appeal and never had an induction kit before
if you still have a gen 2 and want to sell it if its in good condition i wouldnt mind buying that off you mate unless you can suggest anything else

Yeah its sound mate, but you'll be needing roose hoses in different angles, as well as a MAF pipe. Should be sufficiant with the the spec i can see. With the radtec, you have a seperate exit where you can put the chav valve, so you wont need your inlet hose.

should try one of these filters got great reviews by one of the tuning mags but i cant rememeber which one,but it came out on top of all the filter for power gains/torque but also best filteration too,the list of filters blitz, hks,kn piper i think?
the test was done on a nissan skyline turbo which it gave silly power
the review is on the net some where.

as for pipe work why dont you try across the pond for idea's lots of tuners out there who tune focus try this site www.focaljet.com very good site iam a memeber on there myself seen so alsome turbo kits and coolers

I'm afraid that information is pretty useless when it comes to the Focus RS. A few Yanks focus a lot on the 2.0E engine and get Ian Howell type of figures out of them. So they'd be a little extreme for a minor RS setup.

@ Alex

On the Radtec intercooler, you will have a little take off on the inlet pipe (the one from the throttle body) which is used to mount the recirc. valve (which you need to get to replace the chav valve). So when you take your 2 blue hoses off, you can sell them on because they'll be useless.

As for making a filter, you will need to contact Paul @ Roose Motorsport and order the following. But bare in mind, you will need the MAF sensor pipe and filter. This is the old one, the new one looks much better and more professional if you get me

1x 70 to 60mm (width) straight reducer 100mm long
1x 70mm (width) straight 100mm long
1x 70mm (width) 45 degree bend
1x 70mm (width) 90 degree bend

Rough sketch...

On the black one complete...

Only 2 of new induction kit...

Oh yeah of course, you can mount it in its original location, again using a similar hose you have there now for the filter, but a more durable one from Roose. You simply buy this one and mount a MAF pipe and filter on the end.

I just have mine there, well for obvious reasons really

You don't need to loose the dump valve, its just dated, done, frowned upon! Plus a recirc. valve works well on the engine, doesn't stall at times. I run a Turbosmart recirculating valve, a bit expensive for what it is, but works a treat

Its not lost, you simply put a recirculating valve in its place, thus putting back what was once there as standard.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you run these engine without some means of venting. Enough idiots blown turbo's because they love the "chatter" sound without them.......but these aren't RS Turbo's!!!

This is a recirc. valve, they are about Ł80 I think (guess?), but there's plenty about that range in different prices...

But if the chav valve works and doesn't cause any issue, then fine

Not really mate, you can use the standard hose that goes into your airbox. Simpy add the filter (which you can buy off me) and get a MAF housing.

Otherwise, its just a short piece of silicon hosing you need to fit the dump valve onto the pipework
