WHICH FUEL IS BEST? SAINSBURY IS AT 80.9 PER LITRE
Is it Super unleaded, BP ultimate or Shell optimax at the momment ive seen that Sainsbury is the cheapest for super unleaded and all other places are expensive some even up to 89.9 p per litre . Does any one know of a cheaper place to get Super unleaded as our motors do tend to drink petrol and burns a bit of a hole in the pocket CHEERS

just a quick question, I use BP ultimate which is 97 ron but optimax I believe is 98.4 ron, would I notice a difference in performance if I switched to optimax Secondly, forgive me if I'm wrong, but does the series 2 erst have a knock sensor ? is it this that 'senses' the difference in the fuels ?

IMHO cheaper fuel such as tescos and sainsbury's is a false economy - it may save you a few quid to fill up but i've noticed alot of difference in mileage when comparing it to just premuim 95ron bp or shell.
Later S2's have a knock sensor - green plug on the inlet manifold plenum.
The octane rating of petrol tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower octane fuel (like premium 95 octane petrol) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting. So higher octane fuel is lease likely to cause knocking.

Does anyone know whats best to use in a Series 1? I was told its ok to use unleaded although i still use the redex lead replacement additive, not sure if optimax or bp ultimate would cause damage to an s1. As for supermarket fuels i steer clear, i was told its cheap cos its near the end of its shelf life...

I went to motorsport developments on saturday.
(by the way guys these guys are the dogs danglys they know there stuff)
the bloke told me that fuels all come down one pipe diesel and petrol
when they change the fuel ie diesel to unleaded they send down some shit fuel first to wash the pipes this stuff goes to the super market forecourts and then they send down the good stuff this goes to your high street petrol station shell , bp etc
so I don't think I'll be going to sainsbury's for my petrol anymore it's cheap but its cheap because its crap!!!!!!

I use Super unleaded from sainsbury in my S2 with no problems at all and if i cant find a sainsburys then i use shell optimax which i find is also very good. Used to have a Orion EFI and found Shell optimax used to work much better with that engine.

found no prob with sainsburys stuff. supermarket use to have a bad rep but its alot better now. most of the fuel comes from the same place anyway. when a friend worked for sainsburys petrol he said it come from the same tanks that BP used anyway, its just BP charge more for being a brand name.
