Default K&N 57i/Standard Airbox

Have got a Series 2 RST with a K&N 57i induction cone filter on it but was considering putting the standard airbox back on with a panel filter.
Just wondering if this would be a good move for performance reasons?
Is it true that cone filters just suck in hot air and rob you of power?
Only problem is I do like the sound of the induction kit but on the motorway with a scorpion exhaust does tend to get a bit noisy! Will the airbox dull the sound a bit? Will the car drive better/different with these changes? For performance is the main question.
Thanks for the replies.

There was a past on this not so long ago and alot of people said to put the standard air box back on as it duz up the performance as you say cone filters suck hot air in as well which is never a good thing ive got a K&N 57i cone filter on mine which im going to take off a put the standard air box back on with a k&n panel filter in. you will lose the induction sound but should get better performance and thats what we all want at the end of the day

Ive got my standard box on with a k and n panel filter and to be honest if you cut the lip off the front of the box (towards the front of the car) and open out the hole more you will get the same horsepower but with a little more torque ,as i found it does make a difference with the box on!
As without it i just found it makes a whole lot of hissing and ran a little lumpy in hot weather! You could even drill a few holes in the bottom for extra torque!!!
Have you got the R.S turbo bible made by performance ford? you can get it from WH smiths its about 8 pounds and has an airbox guide in there!

the cone filter by k+n is shit, sucks in more hot air than cold as it cant get to any, mine runs (occasionally - as its always broken) better with the standard air box and a k+n element

Thanks a lot for the replies. Has helped me a lot with my decision, so going to put the airbox back on with a K&N panel filter. Like the idea of cutting the front off the box. Does car need to be adjusted from running the cone to the airbox? Thanks.

just done a roller test at this whit the standard airbox

tested the standard motorcraft and a K&N panel filter...

the resul is that I lost 1.6 bhp whit K&N but gain 1.5 Nm......@ 0.7 bar......

motorcraft.....

K&N.....

Spec for the car:

Standard engine....
stage 1 turbo whit -31 act....
motorsport exhaust...
Bleed valve

All result is @ wheels.....

even tryed to put one off the cone on.....here it lost 10bhp....
don't have a print off it...

llosin power with a cone filter cause of heat is a myth,
yes its true when you idleing put tanking it down a bypass all the cold air hitting front of car goes in and blows hot air away, on a rolling road session, a air box with panel filter will be best, on the road cone filter is the best,
