Default RS Turbo 12k Miles Potential Purchase

Hi Guys,

Happy new year to all!

I am am in the process of purchasing my dream car a series 2 RS Turbo 90 spec.

I have seen a few but they didn’t live up to the expectations.

I am interested in the car at 4star classics. It’s the closest I will get to a newish car as i couldn’t obviously buy one when they were new because I was 2 years old 😆

Does anybody know about this car? I know it’s pricey but is there any pro or cons with this car. I know it should through Silverstone auction in 2016. It’s been on sale for a while I would have thought it would have sold by now.

I look forward to your replies. Here’s the link,

thanks,

Suroop.

Can't say i know the car, but it does look pretty clean other than the stated flaws.
Other than the obvious ridiculousness of the market (£32k for a run of the mill Escort is just beyond my comprehension), what would concern me more is the running gear. 12k over that many years - how has the engine been treated, short runs or no runs at all, neither are great for any engine. Bushes/Suspension etc, i know it says its been stored most of its life, but unless its been in a temperature controlled environment, those bushes and components are going to want replacing by now.
If mileage is all you really care about then this is the kind of car for you, but I know there have definitely been better examples for that kind of price in the past so definitely worth shopping about. Equally, if you just want something that "looks" new, then there are plenty of people who restore these to a good/great quality, and yes they'll often be non-standard, but at least there is usually some kind of evidence of the work undertaken.
I'd much rather take RS-Mats car, or Twins car, knowing i could jump on a restoration thread on here and see all the work that has been undertaken and the quality of every little detail, than take a 30yr old car that has sat in a garage where you're heavily reliant on assuming because its low mileage it means its been well looked after in every respect.

Your choice at the end of the day, so all very much IMO

Thanks for your reply mate I am a novice in the Ford market so any advice is worth it’s weight in gold.

I understand when cars have been parked for long periods of time and sometime years they do need recommissioning and most of the times bushes and suspension components need changing.
I only know this as I’ve brought a few low mileage cars and that’s what I’ve had to do to them when I take them to my specialist mechanic.

What I really want is originality and the freshness of the original cars. But at the same time I don’t want a bag of problems car where i am chasing my tail.

I have been looking for some of my favourite Fords for a while now but they seem to be with collectors who don’t want to sell.

Are parts still available for these cars? I know it will need a back box with it having some corrosion. Obviously it had been started up but not driven and condensation has built up in the back box.

This car I am looking at is overpriced IMO but I am trying my best to get a ‘deal’ off the dealer.

thanks again for tour message 👍

Crazy money, does look very nice though but I'd be scared use it lol.
Bonnet badge being darker blue to the rear light blue badge would put me off if the money didn't.
I'm sure light blue ford badges for these escorts, someone will correct me if wrong.

I tried to reply earlier but for some reason my post didn’t submit it’s gone missing!

Well what I said in my post was thank you for your replies all replies are worth there weight in gold as I’m a novice in the Ford market.

I understand in regards to the low mileage cars being sat around for many years and not driven which result in rubbers getting perished and suspension components needing to be changed.

What I am after is originality and freshness of the original car. I’m not saying that is impossible with a higher mileage car I suppose as long as they have been looked after I’m sure they can be really nice cars. It’s just finding the cars I have been looking but not had much luck. A lot of cars don’t have much service history either.

The car in question is overpriced but I am trying to get a better deal off the dealer.

Can you still get parts for the Mark 4 Escort RS’s if I did need to change bushes and components?
I know it needs a new back box.

thanks guys for your help 👍

Things like suspension components and bushes are still readily available, and affordable. Plenty of other mk4 parts (a pillar seals!) cost more than you'd get for both your kidneys if and when you can find them. If you want to keep it original, then it will be significantly more difficult. Original backboxes for example are very hard to source, but an aftermarket mongoose for example would be a fair bit easier. Same with bushes, you can get poly kits from a large number of polybush providers that cover the entire car, but if you wanted to find genuine Ford everything, some bushes will prove far more problematic to source.

You have to remember the youngest are 30yrs old so again be realistic with expectations on things like service history. I'm positive there will be people with full historys out there, but equally a hell of alot of people will just be doing their own servicing. Buying a classic is very different to buying something off a forecourt, but thats why forums like this exist - to get peoples thoughts and experiences and hopefully help you avoid getting stung

I have been talking to a few mates today who are in to classic cars and that is what everyone keeps saying Ford parts are no longer available and if they do come up on sale the prices can be astronomical!

The good news is I suppose after market parts are available to keep these cars in the best shape.

I have noticed this with classic cars and as cars get older service history becomes lighter as you said people self service there cars... and as my dad keeps telling me ‘back in the day’ no one really bothered keeping all the green MOT’s.
When you got your new one you ripped your old one up! And no one kept invoices and half of the people never had books stamped. So I am being real when it comes to large history files.

My biggest worry is being able to get parts for any car I buy and keep it in the best shape I possibly can.

thanks again guys for your comments 👍
