Mk6 Zvh rs Turbo
Hi i just got this car today, runs fine but quite alot if turbo lag i think.
Never had a turbo so pretty clueless
spec is as follows:
1.8 zetec block all work needed done by lancaster engines i.e oil gallerys blanked off breathers and oil return drill and tapped etc with new rings bearings gaskets seals oil pump carbon fibre water pump adapter plate 1300 cam tensioner
stage 3 fiesta rs turbo cylinder head with piper 285 cam adjustable vernier bit of a rattle from one tappet for about 20 seconds or so
felpro 2,5 mm head gasket using high tensile steel head bolt
lightened fly wheel with uprated clutch and diesel gearbox
fiesta rs turbo mangement with 195 superchip biege 701 injecters walbro 255 fuel pump
garret t3 recon turbo .31 acuator
bailey dump valve
82 degree themostat and 88 degree fan switch
air tech large front mounted intercooler
single box exhaust
rs 2000 shocks and springs new prior to the build
focus st 170 brakes 300mm front 286mm rear
What can be done to eliminate the lag? I haven't driven it properly yet maybe it's better when the engine warms? (just waiting for insurance certificate to buy tax)

Mk6 escort gearbox's have longer gear ratios, which means it will take longer to rev = more lag
What spec t3?? Get some pics of the turbo and down pipe, and try and read the housing sizes of the housings
As above wrong chip = wrong ignition curve and incorrect fueling which will cause it to be less responsive
If I was you I would swap out the ecu for the direct replacement ofam and speak to karlos g on here about mapping, and injectors
Then fit something like a series one rs turbo gearbox, it will pick up a lot faster than with the one you most likely have fitted

Turbo doesn't look anything special
I would put it down to poop tuning and the diesel box having the wrong ratios, and if its a turbo diesel box it's even worse
Plus the diesel box is no stronger really

I was always under the assumption the diesel gearbox was the same as petrol. (aside from ratios)
The only reason people think its stronger is it doesnt have the added strain of the LSD when being driven hard.

its more down to the long ratios, which in turn lets it rev slower meaning it doesnt have a big whack of power at a certain rev, less peeky with the boost if that makes sense, but once moving in the gears they are good fun as they tend to rev and rev
also trackion is alittle better.
i found with a s1 box it would just spin up 1st/2nd and 3rd and the ib5 1600 16v box would just take off once on boost, but was alot slower through the gears........
these are things i have picked up over the years of my experience with them
others may have experienced it different

Problems Help please
First of all the car won't start when the engine is hot. Because the starter motor get to hot right?
When the engine is warm and when coming to a stop the revs drop and wants to cut out, so got to keep on some revs but obviously not easy so does cut out from time to time then won't start up because the starters too hot!
So twice i've been in an embarrassing situation in the middle of the road with absolutely nothing i can do till the starter cools down.
Any suggestions please? I really want to keep this car but too many problems so far which is so annoying to say i've only just bought it The guy who sold me this car needs a good smack! Then again i'm a fool for buying it

Yea normally just by the bottom of the throttle body
Too the left
If you look inside you will see a little brass screw
If it idles fine now
Could just need a set up
Check to see if the speed sensor is plugged in
Also try cleaning the throttle body out too

Cheers bud, i'll try this tomorrow

all the ones that dont hold water and oil lol....... just kidding bud
i had one doing the same as you and it was the fueling causing it to cut out, and could be a weak earth too....
clean out the idle control valve, check all breathers, and check none of the boost pipes of intercooler/ vac pipes have a leak, this would cause it to hunt or cut out when stopping
adjust the idle screw to tighten up the throttle bracket/cable slightly
sounds to me like its got a vac leak somewhere

not really bud, needs a day to take all the air pipes off, reseat and seal correctly, take out that one way valve
and fit a proper breather kit from bailey......... reccommended mod for even a standard car mate.
then before drving any rst i would take it for a rolling road session/tune as 90% of them are not set up right and it will be the best Ł150 you can spend on one

I'll bare this in mind as i was just gonna get rid but today after driving the car it's pretty good. Slight lag then hear the turbo spool first 1-2-3 then take off tell ya what it does shift spinning the wheels in 3th on a dry road! then mental in the wet on way home from work, so much fun and when set up i can imagine it's gonna be a very quick car if the boost was then when wanted.

Like you and others have said just needs setting up properly on rolling road and doesn't help with ecu chip, injectors etc being the wrong match to make it run how it should if that make sense. To be honest i could use the car how it is, if it's not doing any damage it'll be ok for now just need to sort the cutting out issue.

for a start on the passenger side of the manifold the one way valve looks to be t pieced into the dump valve,
take it off this goes directfrom the inlet to the map sensor with the 1 way inbetween,
that sounds to me to be your main cutting out issue ive had it before,
then tee the dump valve into the drivers side port which looks to be for a boost gauge

the 195 chip and injectors should work ok'ish upto 200bhp, its the full zetec turbo that they are not suited too because the fueling and ignition demands are totally different
run through some of the stuff mentioned to stop the cutting out and get it rolling road tuned it will be a different car when its done.....
and if your on a budget.... get a ka 1.3 gearbox and a lsd with new bearings and get (karlos g) on here to build them into your diesel gearbox casing, he has run 32psi boost through a stage 3 t3 on a zetec turbo with his and it hasnt let go yet

I really don't want to sell this car!
Any more suggestions on this cutting out when engine is hot? suppose it wouldn't be a problem if the starter motor would start it straight away, but it's just annoying.
If i do keep the car, Replace starter motor, heat shield it and heat wrap down pipe.
Rolling road setup and tidy everything up and fit Escort Cosworth wheels, lower 40mm, rs2000 interior.
Convince me please
