Default Zetec turbo gearbox?

I know this had been covered before but not getting a clear answer...
What gearbox should i use for a zetec turbo conversion? I know you can use the standard ERST BC box but as its all out i might aswell do it properly.

Im going to be running max 300bhp. I know people have used the MTX box and this seems to be a good choice but how hard is it to fit? What other parts do i need to fit it eg. driveshafts? gear linkage? top mount?

Any info would be great

Cheers

Second hand one wont!

Plus with Focus box Matt will need shafts on top and the fabrication to install it into to an Escort.

you'll need 2 shafts, a mount welding in above box on o/s inner wing, a small piece removed from same wing and some sort of lolli pop mount on front or rear or both depending on how well they work, you'll need to cut a hole for cables to go through, 3 of the holes line up for gear selector and the old gear selector hole needs plating as nothing protrudes downwards on the newer stuff, p.s crazycage is off sunning himself in siberia

just for info purposes, im going with an IB5 which i know is basically a BC.

It fits to zetec block same as others, but i bought it with a group n gear kit from m sport and an LSD. supposedly stronger gears and better ratios.

I plan for max 220bhp. Considered other boxes but its a good compromise cause i dont want to start cutting up the wings and losing the original body shape under bonnet. Im fussy

No offence, but in that case don't bother with zetec. The engine itself isn't expensive, but the manifolds and all extras like ancillary hosing adds up massively. Ł1000 on a box is nothing.

/\ totally agree, i use a series one box on my zvh and didn't take long to get it to start making noises, as did the uprated series 2 box i had before.
i'm planning my zetec turbo now and block, rods and pistons are about a grand, not even talking about manifolds or head worsk and all elts and gaskets etc.
Luckily all other bits are there or there abouts to take the upgrade.

Yes but why buy a focus box when you can put in a MTX box in for alot less? Why spend more money than you have to????

while we're on the subject ive been reading gearboxmans website...

Fully rebuilt and strengthened transmissions
Uprated (iB5 specification) bearings
Stage 1 uses uprated Ford viscous limited slip diff
Stage 2 uses Quaife ATB limited slip diff
Stage 2Plus has shot-peened gears
Does that mean basically the stage 1 is an IB5 gearbox (which is an upgrade from BC) and includes an rs turbo diff?

Or does it mean it uses uprated versions of the IB5 bearings?

Secondly, is it worth getting my gears shot peened when i have the conrods done? I'm only aiming for 210ish bhp so i would imagine not.

I might as well get the bigger bearings machine work done while im doing the block though?

Yes thats correct.
The only box from CTS that is stronger than an IB5 (later BC box) is the Stage 2 Plus as it has shot peened gears.
This does not make the main or input shafts any stronger though.
Regards your shot peening, i've stripped teeth at only 190bhp so up to you mate.

What i'm doing is fitting a very low mileage IB5 with a new Racing Puma Viscous LSD in, this IMO is the cheapest and strongest box you can fit

Does the IB5 use the same mounts as the BC?

Yup, except the really late ones (Sport/Street Ka) which need a little adjustment on the brackets/cradle, or Puma ones that are rear starter and no good for that reason.
The CTS box casings are IB5

Thanks Karlos!
What cars can you get them from? And im guessing you still have the same clutch choice as the BC?

Im using with blacktop zetec so only reason i bought gearbox was for rear starter lol.

Turns out it was a smart move as i have decent IB5 with group n fiesta st gear kit and turbo diff. I've yet to put it all together like... Clutch choice is still same yer, the bellhousing looks identical on mine. Webs are different shape but the actual outline is same.

I might get the gears shot peened too then just for reliability. depends on price.

Is there any chance the gearbox will make the right side of engine sit a cm or two higher when fitted to blacktop in mk4 on original bc brackets and mounts?

It's either that or engine mount is sitting low, but i used original hole when i modified the bracket, and there doesnt seem to be any movement in it.

Again it needs different mounts but pretty much should bolt up. Need some holes for cables to pass through cause its cable shift, make sure you get mech with it as i've heard they're a cock to find.

heard good things about them though, or at least, nothing bad...

because a focus box is a mtx and they both cost the same to fit. so you can pay Ł100 and get no diff or Ł400-450 and have one with a atb.

choice is yours!!

as i said above is what you need for any mtx and if you can't find a frs box then for now get a normal mtx fitted then wait for one to come up for sale then it'll just be a simple box swap as you'll have already done all the work and you can then sell your ordinary mtx and get your money back on it
