Default PICS! If your going to break a gearbox......

....do it properly!
Main shaft snapped clean in half!

So now what do I do?!
Does a CTS Stage 2+ have stronger shafts as well as shot peened gears??

Karl, lob another cheap RST gearbox in it. I've stripped gears, yes, and smashed diffs but have never broken a Mainshaft clean in half like that so I bet it was a 'fluke'.

would agree with C there, if you look at the left hand shaft on the 2nd pic you can see the abnormality in the steel where its sheared. Take it back to ford, they have a 20 year warranty dont they must admit im glad mine isnt running so I dont have this worry anymore!

Well, I know I wouldn't rush out and spend £1300 on a gearbox after breaking just one.

I got to the point where I was just buying up £50 gearboxes and building the gearsets into my casing. I have to say though, you pass another milestone at 280lb/ft (GENUINE) IMO. One where gearbox breaking goes up another level. Mine got so that I could barely take on an overtake without pulling the teeth off third gear!! LOL. 3 gearsets in about 1500 miles was pretty good going.

Especially at the CTS 'boxes seem just as likely to break.

Proper job there! I'd be quite proud of that.
Hope you get a new box sorted to and get out to get a chance to enjoy the motor.

It's my third, stripped teeth on the input shaft, and 3d gear already :thumbup
I wont be spending £1300, I already have the Quaife ATB so i'll either get a secind hand CTS 2+ and sell my diff paying for around half of it, or i'll fit the ATB into something like a big bearing Jamsport box, etc..

Wow, do it proper Karl! For the price of a CTS box I'd go to Jano and get an MTX set up. Shame the ATB wont fit in an MTX

I THINK it's £1200 but don't quote me on that. I know they have custom one peice drive shafts (not cut and welded) which I think keep the Escort MK4 hubs, proper one off mounts, modified linkage, and you'll have to use a Series 1 or RS1600i front ARB but thats included in the cost (and a mod you really should do with over 200 BHP IMO) I really wish I didn't buy my straight cut box and gone this route. I'm sure Jano's abused a standard MTX with 350 BHP and it didn't skip a beat.

And you can also lower the engine at the same time for about £50 more IIRC with a custom engine mount. Lower the centre of gravity and all that.

i can get a big bearing jamsport box for around £600 then just take your diff to them to have put in at the same time .... half the price of cts.

im gunna look into doing an mt box conversion and fit a atb in that as over the years in different cars ive smashed about 15 gearboxs in rsts and cossies ect.

its all fun i blew up 4 diffs in a week in my mk2 escort lol bloody idiot doing burnouts lol

Typical...

People have made the management systems better, upgraded internals of engines, used large turbos with custom inlet and exhaust manifolds and even changed from 8v to 16v.. Yet still using the same old boxes....

no fluke mate as ive done 2 , 1 was in my 300bhp zetec turbo which i can understand , the other was in my bog standard fiesta rs1800 smashed it in two , in exactly the same place as the one pictured above. i only had drive in first and it was a 30 mile journey home

there is a company in nottingham who rebuilt mine called scotts transmissions . a brand new ib5 big bearing box with brand new ford shafts , gears bearing etc fitted into the box for £350 . scott is very good and would highly recommend him. i was getting charged £80 to take the box out and £200 for a new shaft alone.

let us know if you want the number and also the metal improvment company is around the corner from my house , they do all cts shot peening and super finishing so i could get you a price if you get a new gearset off scott.

cheers paul

yeah i have been there as well - thats why ive opted for the big tooth box.
The ford shafts are soft in the middle and only case hardened. So if there is any weak point on the outer that is case hardened then its only an matter of acceleration before it goes.

Yeah but you have 315bhp!!! lol
I dont have the money or the skills for the MTX conversion, a second hand CTS box is my only real option.

After breaking various so called 'good boxes' and the odd diesel box lol, i'm on my 2nd cts stage 2 and to be honest the first one lasted 2 years of proper abuse with 250 odd bhp, and the 2nd one seems to holding up ok touch wood.

I wouldn't say they're anything that special but the best of a bad bunch, i find cts damn slow and not great to deal with but again not found anywhere better!

The mtx does sound good but as much as people say it's easy to do etc, it's really not as straightforward as fitting another bc lol though i know it's probably the best answer for 300+.

Tbh Karlos i'd really look into at least getting one rebuilt yourself unless you really do know where it's came from, i've been bitten too many times now to fuck about with 2nd hand stuff that's done 500 miles etc as it always seem to cause more hassle than it's worth

Big bearings are not going to help when it's the shafts snapping and the teeth sheering off! Oh and this was a freshly built big bearing box!!

Rear starter mate, and again just as much hassle as fitting a MTX, custom shafts etc..
