Default oil cooler thingy?

Got a standard one of these on the back of my S2 block that the filter screws into. As I am getting the block rebuilt just now they have suggested replacing this item.

Is this an oil cooler or sandwich plate? (so I have the right terminology lol)

Was thinking of getting one so that I could run oil pressure and temp gauges off it. If so does anyone know the specification of the fittings required i.e thread sizes etc.

Alternatively if I just go for the standard one can someone tell me either the part number or the spec, cheeRS.

It's an water/oil heat exchanger. It's there as much to heat the water as it is to cool the oil for things like heaters on cold mornings and to run the engine up to temp quicker.

I see Matt Lewis does these on the bay and they have outlets for connecting oil temp & pressure senders. Would these be for mechanical or electrical type gauges?

I don't think I want to run temp from the sump as that is at the bottom of the engine and may not be the best place to take a reading.

For oil pressure you need to buy a T peice that screws into where the standard oil pressure sensor goes (next to the oil cooler) the put the standard oil pressure sendor back into the end of the T peice then your new one goes in the side (will come with the gauge)

As for the one Matt Lewis Motorsport sells im pritty sure they can be used for both mech and electrical type gauges.

Hope this helps!

Matt lewis ones are NOT an oil cooler they are a sandwhich plate/adapter that fits between your oil cooler and filter, giving you 3 outlets for fitting mechanical or electrical gauges (oil pressure and temp), if you mean this one?

Why have they suggested to replace it? Unless its split or leaking(internally or externally) then i'd just leave it alone. There good units for a standard item

Karlos thats the one I was looking at earlier thanks.

So whats better mechanical or electrical gauges?

The reason they gave was basically because there may be a build up of metal inside. Basically my coolant system was orange(despite being flushed several times) and the engine is full of rusty bits and or worn metal from my bearings/shells etc.

For the price of it I would rather fit a new one and while I am at it fit some gauges so I know what is going on rather than wait for the pressure warning light to flicker.

With regards to mounting the gauges I saw a plate that goes where the stereo is (again on the bay) but looks like you must have to glue it into place.

Not sure whether or not I want to do that yet but I would rather not have to drill holes in my dash. I don't have a stereo fitted anyway so at least that would help fill an ugly hole lol.

So long as you buy good quality gauges not a cheapo ones IMO either Mech or Elec will be fine.

They will be inaccurate and of poor build quality, you can pay anything up to £100 a gauge so £15....... what do you think? lol

Just to resurrect this again, I got my adapter from Matt Lewis but need the actual oil cooler to fit to my CVH block. I see there are loads on Burton Power but dunno which one so can someone point me in the right direction please. I need one that will take the standard two push on hoses, cheeRS

just get a sandwich plate from burtons for an oil cooler, get a thermoblock one (i.e. thermostatic) and you cen get them with push on fittings for pushing hose on and jubileeing if that's your chosen route.

Ive heard of peole removing these and not bothering with them so a larger zetec oil filter can be used, anyone else done this as i was thinking of doing so.

Mine always ran the Modine unit and I think it's good to keep it. They are insanely expensive to buy new though.

They are a heat exchanger inside though, so like any coolant filled radiator will get clogged up and drop in performance, that might be what they were referring to.

Yup pretty sure thats what mine says on it. My engine builder recommended to change it as the block was full of rusty coolant and contaminants in the oil so this thing may be full of crud and there is no way to clean it properly. Better to be safe than sorry I think and fit a new one anyway.

lots of clean water and some pressure will get it flowing well again, or maybe drop it in an acid bath to loosen all the crud up.

Everything was acid dipped but not sure if this part was, it does look pretty clean though so will phone them during the week to find out what the story is.

So is it best that i keep mine on the car? i was going to do away with it tbh. Ive got a brand new unit at home but it doesnt look exactly the same as the original i have on the car so never bothered fitting it when i last built up my engine bay.

Mine is defo the Modine US unit with a feed for oil and a feed for water.

Don't see how you can do away with it if there are pipes that go to/from it other than fitting an external oil cooler somewhere. I think if you fit an external one then you may need a higher pressure oil pump but dunno 4 sure.

Gonna do a search on here anyway for oil coolers.
