Default car is over cooling

oright i have a escort rs turbo and is pretty much standard apart from a exhaust, when i leave the car idling it warms up ok, fan kicks in, and thermostat works fine, but when i drive around the temperature drops right down of the scale and the heaters are freezing, then when i stop the temp will go up fine, anybody know what it is, also the previous owner had a bigger frount mount ic on it so cut away a bit of the back of the bumper but now it just has the standard cooler back, not sure if this would affect it. please help, cheers

hi
mines the same sits on the m all day long then drops down to the little box in the temp guage but my heater works fine but didnt as there was shit in the heater matrix
this could clear your problem up firstly drain the system of water
from in the engine bay locate the 2 pipes that alow the flow of water into heater matrix they are located around the back of the engine on the bulk head you will see one coming from the left and one to the right when found and system drained remove the 2 pipes carefully as its easy to brake the plastic tubes attached to heater matrix
then you will need a hose to flush the matrix through dont use a pressure washer with a bit of hose connected todo this as the pressure might be to much place a large container under the opposite end to catch what comes out which could just be sludge as the heater matrix is low down in the water system and are prone to getting soiled up with sludge
once the water is running clear reconnect the pipes back up and fill the system with water just for now no antifreeze yet untill you know the heater is working as it should ,
turn the heater control to full heat and put the fan on whilst the car warms up and watch the water level once the car starts and if it drops just top it up before the car gets to hot
if the heater works as it should which i think it will do drain system to add antifreeze job done
if it does not work and you are sure the thermostat is working correctly you could try covering half your radiator with kitchen foil which will allow it to get that bit hotter this is an old trick that use to work on the old tx1 taxes to get better heat in the winter but never ever had to do it to any rs as they run hotter than a n/a cars anyway

CVH engines do have a common flaw in them. The thermostat housing has a small passage in it over the larger passage wehre the thermostat goes into. In the smaller hole, there should be a pea sized plastic marble. The cars being some 20 years old now, most have lost this small plastic piece making the car run too cold on winter at speed. I think it acts originally as a one way valve or a limiter.

I expect your thermostat has just gone weak with age, there isnt really anything else it can be, and the weather is particularly fresh at the moment. I expect in a normal winter you wouldnt really notice it but seeing as its extra extra cold this winter thats probably why they are going cold again.

A new thermostat won't cost you much, the clip is a bit of a twat to fit though

Default still overcooled

right have already fitted brand new matrix and thermostat and i still have this problem. just annoying cos i drive down a longish road and the temp goes down of the scale, and doesent go back up until i stop and let it idle for 5 mins, uses loads of fuel on the motorway aswel cos its running so cold. gonna try the ol tin foil trick aswell and will se what happens.
cheers for replys.

is there any harm to boosting around with water tem gauge low (cold) if oil temp is around 85 degree?

I would think thats fine, but your engine may not be a peak running/efficiency temperature is all.

Sender wire disconnected from head?

my old audi a4 used to run real cold, it was the waterpump, the impeller had sheared off, common fault

A valid point, although any engine running with a pump that doesnt circulate will almost definitely overheat. Being as the Temp sender is in the cylinder head on these i would have doubts as to whether this would be the fault in this case.

My car runs exceptionally cool but even in this bitterly cold winter the heaters are still toasty warm and the gauge sits up in the normal section, and im only running a standard lump too! Dont mean to sound patronising - you sure you fitted the stat the right way round and that you clipped it in securely? The clip is a bit of a nightmare to fit properly.

will be down to the cold matey..i jus bought a cossie an had a 200mile drive home..was fookin freezin. When at spd the needle would jus lift into the white square.

one trick it to tie a piece of cloth, or cardboard over your rad (i wont do this cos i have a front mount cooler), start with a piece around A4.

This will allow to the cooling system to keep hold off some heat, but keep a close eye on the guage..

I seem to have made one of my famous invisible posts again...

Try a working thermostat housing with the loose plastic part still inside it.

i have just bought a series 2 with a similar problem! drove home and temp needle hardly got going. took thermostat out and it wasnt opening in boileing water, fitted new one and its better but still not great? heaters are like luke warm and as soon as the car moved temp really dropped down.

Never heard of the plastic bit you mention above?

have flushed the system today and will do again tomorow and refil everything. As above if pump was fooked engine would overheat?

What about the actual cooling circuit could this be wrong, anyone one have a diagram of how it shoud be?

cant really be wrong, its just down to the cold weather.

leave the car running for 15mins an it'll come upto temp, but when your moving the rad does its job, just a bit too well in this recent weather

my other Rs used to be red hot in minutes and the heater would stay like that. this one never gets above luke warm. I let it idle for a while other day got half way on the gauge drove for 10 mins nothing fast and it went right back down. all the time heaters never got "hot"

took thermostat housing off today to look for the plastic thing in the passage. I found it and there is one there it just moves around no spring or anything moves very freely. Is this right or wrong?

There is one very easy way to tell if its actually overcooling or not................. give it a good thrashing for 20mins pull over and VERY slowly undo your expansion tank cap! If there is pressure there and hot steaming water then it's NOT running cold and there must be something wrong with your temp gauge, sender, or wiring loom.

i thought that at first but pipes in the engine bay, heater temp do all seam to match what the gauge is showing. its getting toi about 1/4 way up now its just not hot! on the otherhand eventually the rad has heat in so stat must be open. there pressure in the tank can see it and here it when i release. engines going soon anyway so will just live with it i think for now St170 turbo sat there waiting

Sounds right to me. So that is ruled out then for you.
I think 95% don't know there should be one and 60% don't have it anymore.
