Question overheating a bit

Have a completed efi conversion in my s2, running very well only im a bit worried about the temp gauge..When im looking at the gauge the needle is sitting over half , right in the middle of the "N" in NORM.. Iv the big front mounted pace intercooler with the 2 fans on Front and a Fiesta pace rad in behind. There is no engine thermostat in it.. When im after driving and turn the engine off i can here the water in the rad bubbling for a short time..So whats the story will i replace the water in the rad with some special coolant or stick another fan behind the rad.. or would the extra fan ony melt?? Engine seems very hot can this be very bad yeh??

ě had this with a standart engine, so i think it wouldn't be that bad..
The cars just get very hot a fan behind the rad is a bad idea. So close to the turbo could give you problems

hi there
is the reading your getting after motorway use or around town and i mean around town with hard driving
did the temp go this high before conversion
are you running same boost
also have you checked you dont have any air in the coolant system
as its easy done
a swirl pot would help things a bit as it will take the bubbles out of the system as i beleave
are your fans in front of the cooler blowing or sucking through
also are they mounted on the cooler or in between cooler and rad
running a car like this with no thermostat is going tobe a git durring the cold months as the car will take longer to warm up
have you checked by eye the condition of the rad through the holes ,does it look clean
Does the car use water much
if it uses water alot and your getting bubbling might be head gasket as the bubbles are a sign ofvaparising of the water which turns the water to steam in affect bubbles due to exspanion
or it could be like mine runs at a low temp all day long under any condition of driving but i get a bit of bubbling when i switch off as its air rising to the highest point (exspansion tank)
i would start the car from cold and leave it on tick over and watch the exspanion tank and look for bubbles then
does your fans kick in as it reaches the (m) of norm
is the fan switch ok
tobe honest with you its hard to say without the car in front of me i would also do a sniff test to exspansion tank for co2

I'd start by carefully letting out the trapped air in the expansion tank after a drive,as you may only have a simple problem of air in the system.Regards,Micky

hi
dont want to be critical of you statement above but the exspansion tank has air in it all the time with or without removing the cap and lets face it if he removes the cap after driving it about he may get burnt when the water bubles out

what you do is fill the system to correct level loosen the pipe from the top of thermostat housing the small pipe on top and then run the engine to warm it up so the thermostat opens but in this case he has no thermostat so it can be done from cold in this case, once warm remove the pipe whilst engine running and hold it higher than exspansion tank and as the water pump circulates it will pump the air out if any but dont let the tank run down to low
once the water pumps clearly with no spurting, pop the pipe back on and tighten and refill the exspansion tank with hot boiled water never put cold water in a hot engine and this will sort the air in the system out if its trapped

everything is electrically perfect it has omex 600 its not the head gasket because its only rebuilt a few weeks. i only got it mapped to .3 bar , 145 hp + 163lbft last week(clutch kept slippng on day of map, should be around 200 hp) but it only has water in the rad no coolant yet.. the fans are mounted at the very front of i.c the rad sits in behind maybe that is it??? when im on the motorway the gauge goes back down to middle level but when im driving through the town it stays at the "N".. would that little degree be enough to over do the head gasket??

to be honest with you i have owned 5 rst and not one has ever run the temps as yours does mine have all been lower and at times i have hammered them and i mean hammered them and they never got that hot maybe to the o and thats about it around town
if you can get hold of another gauge or borrow someones clocks to see if it does the same and change temp switch ,this is what i would do as anythink over the n on guage is a concern as your only running 145 bhp and when it goes upto the 200 mark i bet the temps rise aswell as that turbo will run alot hotter with more boost like a bar
cant remember if you said anythink about your rad
but that might be the problem
i can only give my views on the situation you have but i would be worried if it was my car running about standard power now and i aint trying to scar you but dont get me wrong i have seen rst running around the o to n mark before but they where pushing 210/220 brake on sunny hot days racing about town but dropped to m on motorways
