ERST gearboxes, need help........
rebuilding an lsd gearbox, new gaskets, oil seals, bearings , need a new mainshaft too as mine is very worn,
trouble is i cant get the old bearing race out of the casing on the main shaft side. just wont budge , tried heating it up, even tried a puller but dont wanna go too mad as the aluminium is quite thin. any body got any ideas, here is the offending article
cheers mark.

its just not happening, spent the last hour on the damn thing and its moved to the lip of the casing but no more, im in risk of damaging the casing if i continue, cant even cut the thing out cus its hardened steel, nothing will touch it.

st170 breaking
its gotta come out 1 way or another, if its a choice of potentially breakin the casing or not getting it out theres only 1 option
i cant get an idea of size but usually in the case il weld a nut to the steel as best as can be done then slide hammer or knock out teh bit
saying that if its just the circular bit and not the flat bit (looks like casting) i'd try to kock 1 side in and the other side will have to come out then go at it again

try using the puller to put pressure on it then heat the casing evenly around it, or put a weld (on high amps) across the top and bottom of
the race then use a small sharp chisel to break it up next to the welds,
or if you have oxy acetalyne burn it out. hope this helps

The best way to get it out is using a blind bearing puller like this one....
http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Blind-B...c-Sealey-AK714
The jaws expand and grip inside the bearing and you knock it out with the slide hammer. May be worth a look in the yellow pages to see if there is a transmission specialist near to you, take your gearbox case down there and remove the bearing.
Also have a look at my engine/box rebuild thread although i didnt replace the bearings as i just wanted to strip the box to inspect it.
