Default no ignition

ok i went out this morning to shop, went in shop,
came back out, got in car and turned key and had
no ignition lights, i thought the immobiliser was playing up
but just to make sure i ran a live feed to the ignition barrel and
it all lit up so i turned key and it started, when i removed wire it
cut out and lights went out again.
i cannot find the problem but know it is not the immobiliser as
all mine does is disable the circuit to the starter moter and can
easily be bypassed (crap lol).
is there an ignition relay or anything similar that might have gone?
i have checked all fuses under bonnet.
any help much appreciated.

lol it fires up on the button with the live wire on the ignition feed
but does nothing by just turning the key.
what i want to know is where the ignition barrel gets its feed from,
im assuming there is a relay somewhere that i have not found as
i have checked all the fuses and tried to find where the wires go but
cannot. basically the permanent feed to the ignition barrel is dead.

Nope. If you remove the lower steering cowling and locate the big grey 4-pin plug about 6 inches down from the ignition switch, you should find that has started to melt. The only real cure is a replacement ignition switch, available from Fords for about Ł10 (ish) and a new multiplug on the car loom end, otherwise it will do the same thing in about 6 months.

What is happening is that the original multiplug is getting overloaded through the ignition with age and is overheating and melting the contacts. More common on MK3 versions, but is also known on the MK4 ones.

You WILL need a good main-powered soldering iron though to remake the connections, as a gas one will not be good enough to make a good contact on the main +12V red lead.

ok thanks for the help so far, i have been out and tested the
feed from the multiplug and there is no power, so im assuming
the fault is somewhere else, i cannot seem to trace where the large
red wire goes to, does this go staright to the battery?
im on about the permanent live to the ignition switch, if i run a
live wire to either side of the multi plug or straight to the ignition
switch then it all works fine.also the plug has no signs of damage.

Ah, that is hopefully easier.

The main +12V red lead to the ignition runs via the battery + terminal via a "fuselink" wire. This wire should be the only one that is black (and quite thin) in colour. The 1st 4-6 inches are the fuselink and are designed to break if overloaded. However, they do degrade. I would check the lead where it goes to the battery and see what its condition is. Chances are it has broken where the connector is.

From what you wrote, I assumed you were putting the supply @ the ignition, i.e. the red lead had +12V. Should have asked previously really.

My switch is being funny and is breaking down inside I think the grey plug and loom look ok ..I've got a black plug version in stock ..Would it be possible to un-solder my grey plug loom and re-solder it to a the black plug base /switch ..is that possible ..is it just the looms that are different does anyone know ?

You need to verify you are getting a supply (+12 V) on the hot wire (i.e the red wire) and then proceed from there. Also check the condition of the multi plug, as mentioned above.
