Default can you alter the amount of time or fuel the pump primes for

my engine doesnt seem to have enough fuel to run on between being primed and the fuel pump kicking in.

the fuel pump primes......the car starts.....then stops.......and about the same time the fuel pump comes on..........this then floods the engine for the next time i try to start it.

if i then unplug the fuel pump and crank it over, after a few cranks (to dry the fuel out) it starts, then if i quickly plug the fuel pump back in it runs fine.

also the fuel pump doesnt prime every time.

anybody have any idea what this is related too
p.s ive just fitted a brand new fuel pump relay to it so surly that cant be the problem.

i have 2 relays, one of them brand new and one not. i have checked the one that isnt new and its all good, but i dont really want to take the other one apart as it is brand new and i dont want to damage the casing. could the metering head be anything to do with this?

yes the metering head could effect this, remove the air filter and check the plundger for freeness and return and check it sits at the correct hieght. also do you have an immobiliser, mine is faulty and stops the fuel pump

you could also have air in the fuel system

well i can start by checking those things out then.
yes my car has a clifford and i think thats what stops my fuel pump priming, although it primes now and again. if i turn the ignition on it doesnt prime, but then if i turn the key back and let the immobiliser come on, then turn the ignition on again and press the key fob to de-immobilise it ,then the fuel pump primes up. i guess this could be the source of that problem.......
but it doesnt really explain why my car runs for a sec then cuts out, then if i do the procedure i stated in my first post it runs ok.????????
confusing huh

Also check:

the accumulator - it maintains pressure in the system when the fuel pump has been switched off.

Do you MFi guys change you Fuel Filter regularly? I used to find that if I didn't change mine once a year, I would get problems.

It's important on any car, of that there is no doubt, but on MFi, they really do seem to object to a dirty filter!!
