Default Lazy Tappet

think i may have a lazy tappet, knocks sometimes, can this be cured or does it need replacing?

Try some WYNNS oil system modifier.
Despite odd name it is for this kind of thing and works wonders, I have used it in my cos myself to cure this.

Tappets can knock if bad enough, as clearance between cam and follower/valve head bang together but must be really bad.

If your having problems with the top end i would inpect the oil ways on the head, and remove the lifters and soak them in some petrol or thinners, you'll find the oil inside seeps after not very long

Sorry safechav could not find the author saying "like a bottom end"
Sound is produced by impact, remember all peoples descriptions of the same thing will differ slightly.

Stand them on some cloth somewhere warm for a day or so, and you'll probably find some more oil seeps out, and then yea, fresh oil will never go a miss

While they are out inspect the faces for pitting and dishing etc. Ideally if they are in good condition they will be completely flat. And also if they don't want to pull out of the head easy leave them be and get back to me!

ive removed the rocker cover to find this one lifter sitting higher up than the others! this isnt right is it?



here it is again


all the others sit like this?


think this could be my problem, thenoise does sound around where this lifter is aswell

Yea! Because the cam lobe is pushing it up, and the valve spring is greater than the pressure of the spring within the lifter, As soon as u start the engine the oil pressure will return it to normal.

r ok, just thought it was abit wierd that this one lifter was the only one raised, il give them all a saoking anyway, see wot happens

lifters dont seem to be worn or marked or dished and also checked the oil ways in the holes for the lifters,

does it matter wot order they go bk in? ive kept them in order but thougt id ask anyway

there soaking now

Unlikely there is any significant wear on the cam or lifters then.

If the lifters were dished or worn it would be obvious, when they are ok they look very flat and highly polished in appeareance

As i said its best to stand them on a cloth after somewhere warm for a few hours, you will find more seeps out and you wont want to mix whatever you've soeaked them in with your engine oil

put it back together, noise is still there and guess what, its the water pump! can hear it clearly now

I wouldnt recommend driving that in any way until you change it, if the pump ceases - good bye cam belt and top end
