Default GearBox Issues???

Yep i know this is an Old Topic but is a S2 Escort Rs box (with the LSD) DIY rebuildable? i.e. if someone that knew the way round the Engine bay (but never rebuilt a Box) bought the new Bearings/Gaskets is it a Job for an Expert or could it be done? Is there any Write ups on how to do it on line??

I've done a search and not come up with a Lot (don't know if its just me being a noob) but every one seems to just buy a Rebuilt box and stick it in? is this just becose its easyer or Rebuilding yourself that hard to do?

While i'm on the subject, the box in question drives fine on load but when you are on overrun is Whines realy bad, does anyone know what causes this? (at a guess i'd say its the Lay shaft bearings that are dead) its the second box to do this in 6 months is it bad luck, wrong oil???? I would rather it not happen again and if i knew what caused it it would help

Cheers.

I now know its defo the Lay shaft bearings and its defo a LSD box but i am still not decided if its a job i may be able to take on or its getting taken to a Trans Shop.

I'd say it sounds more like the diff bearings than the layshaft bearing. These offen make the driveshaft seals also go bust and a telltale sign is the leaking oil from the driveshaft holes. Other thing is a badly worn speedo drive gear.

There you see a new speedo drive gear (red) and the heavy duty IB5 layshaft bearing (left) used to replace the original (right).

Here you can see how bad the diff bearings can go.

There you can find some pictures of my recent rebuild:

The only site I know about offering some help is JimHearne's:

Cheers for that, would you say its not to bad to do or is it one of those jobs that just fall apart as you strip it so its hard to tell where stuff came from?

As you can proberly tell a gear box is something i don't know alot about, they usaly just get Recon'd but due to a lack of Funds there is some weighing up of pro's and con's of doing this job DIY style.

There aren't too many moving parts in a RST box. Quite simple really. The one thing were a proper/special tool might be needed is the removal of the fifth gear. It might sit properly hard on the shaft. It's dead easy to remove with the proper Ford tool though and on some boxes it just lifts off by hand. Go figure... Just be warned if it sits hard.
If there's something specific, just ask.

Fairly straight forward to rebuild the BC box. Just take your time and note how eack part fits before removing. Keep all the parts in order to make assembly easier.
