i have 2 mates with totaly standard rs turbos just mongoose exhaust etc
both of theres have never gone wrong in all the years they have had them
its just when you tune them wrong ie: up the boost without sorting the fueling and ignition then they det then blow up
or you could do the engine right but dont uprate stuff like engine mounts and stuff like that one thing leads to another etc
the best way would uprate everything first then the engine but to do it all properly costs money

becouse when you drive down the road in the town centre you know in the back of your mind somebody is looking at it thinking "nice one" & somebody needs to put all them corsa's / saxo's / 106's to shame & show them that a near 20 year old car is still at the top of its game & when they do go wrong theres never a shortage of parts going around (well some are getting skares for the s1) plus theres no other car make in britain that has 4 differant magazines dedicated just to the ford mark

Well, I've loved them when I was a child and I love them even more now that I can drive them.
Best thing about the RST is that it's an old-skool petrol turbo car with some serious lag and even more serious boost! Coupled with the front-wheel drive and antic LSD it's a truly unique driving experience.

They don't have to be unreliable. Don't forget that everything on them is getting old so a 16 year old water pump isn't going to last much longer is it?
Preventative maintenance is the key. Trucks have 6 weekly inspections and defects rectified. My own car used to get an inspection every couple of months and any developing defects noted and rectified within a few weeks. At the time I was doing 30k a year and my car was an 18 year old Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia. It only ever broke down once in 7 years of owning it and I scrapped it when it was 21.
You can't keep driving the cars and just change the oil and filters and think you have done an service on the car. An oil change is a lube service only. A full service involves an inspection of all aspects of the vehicle. SO next time you're thinking of doing a "service" on you car on the driveway, just remember that the rest of the car need attention too.

Mines not unreliable.
I love mine as I love wiping the smug grin off the face of the guy in his Scooby/M3 as he reliases a shonky old FWD near 20 year old Escort can give his sports car a run for its money.
I wait the PassionSccoby/M3 squad to jump in and tell me how both are better cars blah blah

i only put up this post for other people to explain why they like em so much
NOT TO GET A LECTURE!!!
as for your servicing, what u trying to say is you more or less rebuild the engine every few months!!!! i dont think so!!
when u say service ie lube and water change!!!
when i do service mine, it get new filter, new oil filter, new cam belt, new rocker gasket, new sump gasket, new oil, water and new anti freeze, new fuel filter, spark plugs and leads!! and a once over on the rest of the car not just the engine.. i think thats classed as a service
so u expect people to come and tke their heads off if the car is running fine, then by taking the head off the HAVE to replace the head gasket and stretch bolts?? pretty pointless to me,,
where as the water pump and oil pump, yeah i agree bout em been 16+ years old, i never had the waterpump failure as i replaced it along with the oil pump when i rebuilt the engine but i DID have headgasket failure.
i think you cannot help you head gasket failing mate.. you can inspect a head gasket without taking the head off..
dont need to sound cockey or anything but need to get my opinion across

Apart from the fact that my post wasn't aimed at any one person in particular (as I know how little people know about what a service involves unless they are/have been in the motor trade), but what has the engine internals got to do with preventative maintenance? If you need to go into the engine then it's not preventative is it?
Preventative maintenance is having a good go over the whole car periodically and actioning any issues that you spot before they get chance to break.
Then the point of the 16 year old water pump is that the age profile of these cars is quite against them so older parts will start failing and then because of other parts that are the similar age, they will start failing also. This makes it seem like one thing after another.

the best thing about escort rs turbos is the looks you still get for a car that was made years ago in alot of peoples eyes these cars are classics & they respect that. when i drive my one i know people are looking the buzz you get from that alone is unreal, the sound it makes just idleing is
and a good fast rs turbo WILL & DOES show a lot of big money cars a thing or two so you got to love them for that. the rs turbo still & will have a lot of street cred for years to come. & that does make you proud of owning one

ive owned mine nearly 8 years and its been totally reliable 6 years in the current 200 bhp spec its in now only thing thats ever gone wrong is a wire melting to the fuel relay which was easy to sort anyway. Dont skip on maintenance and there as reliable as anything else on the road and i just love em to bits the sound the way they drive the looks you get from people .

i love mine because it may seem sad but out of all the cars in the world this is my dream car, it makes me smile everytime i go out in it, its good old back to basics where you learn to drive without all the crap mod cons, there is sooo many mods for them to make them even better than they already are and they go like shite off a shovel and make ppl spit blood when they get wiped out by them.

I have an 88 s2 and a 04 sti. People that brag about beating subaru's and evo's annoy me, standard v standard what would win. how much has been spent to reach the capabilities of beating a subaru or evo?
Why do we love our old escorts? because they get respect and they are a car you have to drive and not a car that drives you
