That looks like the Rally Design item I bought years back for my S2. Price is similar and holds same bits inside.
SafeChav Have you tried one of these?
Mine definately got rid of the sloppiness in gear changing and shortened the shift. Felt a lot more positive and when I took it out when the car was for sale and refitted another Mk4 item, it took me ages to get used to a standard stick as everything seemed in the wrong place.
jimmylaud If you're on a budget and can fit the kit yourself (only minimal work needed: remove whole gearshift system, then drill & pin your stick to accept the plate (stick length needs to be extended: hence the drill & pin bit)) then it's a worthwhile mod. If you have the money ot spend on a B&M kit, then get that.

Here's a pic of mine all fitted. The plate, bolts and nuts are covered in wax-oil type protectant. The gearstick gets extended inside the plastic cover.

In the ebay link you can see the instructions. The bottom photo in the instructions shows where you cut around the outer casing of the gearstick, then lengthen it (it has an inner and outer tube). You then drill & roll-pin it to hold it in that new length. The bolts are for attaching the whole lot together as the old bolts will be too short to accept the spacer.
Just to add: make sure you have a mk4 gearstick fitted. My car was an early D plate and had a mk3 gearstick fitted. I had to buy a 2nd-hand mk4 assembly as the plate does not sit in the cover the same due ot the difference in the gearbox gate set-up.

rs shawn, as far as im aware slopnyness in the stick can only ever occur from the universal joint at the front end that goes onto the selector shaft.
I myself haven't used a short shifter though no.......

For the price of the kit is a very worthwhile addition if you don't want to buy a B&M item. I had mine on the car for two years and never had a problem with it. Gear change was precise and smooth and a lot more solid than before...which was stirring porridge in comparison.

Just make one yourself IMO the puma/Escort linkage is the best i have felt and used. EVEN compared to the B&M or any other type of linkage.

B+M then attack your U/J.
drill out standard bushes and replace with cartridge bearinds and m6 (I think)
bolts= no slop,no play and the best shift possible.
Good Luck
P.S.
Not Cheap

Regarding the UJ, I simply laid mine on the bench, gave it a tap on the ends of the pins to tighten them and now it feels as good as new and has done for the last 4-5 years since I refitted it. Why make it more complicated than it needs to be?
You just need to make sure you don't over-tighten it.

Depends how far gone it is i suppose
nope no pics.
i can take one of the selector from inside the car, but cant see what help that would be
. And i deffo cant jack it up at the mo.
To feel the difference you would need to sit inthe driver seat and change gear for yourself.
or ask the people who had had it done for them already
Regards
