Here's a pic of mine all fitted. The plate, bolts and nuts are covered in wax-oil type protectant. The gearstick gets extended inside the plastic cover.
In the ebay link you can see the instructions. The bottom photo in the instructions shows where you cut around the outer casing of the gearstick, then lengthen it (it has an inner and outer tube). You then drill & roll-pin it to hold it in that new length. The bolts are for attaching the whole lot together as the old bolts will be too short to accept the spacer.
Just to add: make sure you have a mk4 gearstick fitted. My car was an early D plate and had a mk3 gearstick fitted. I had to buy a 2nd-hand mk4 assembly as the plate does not sit in the cover the same due ot the difference in the gearbox gate set-up.
