Default Fuel pump problems - help

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this -

I fitted an uprated Bosch fuel pump to my Escos this weekend. I got it finished this afternoon, and the car runs. However the pump makes a really loud "grinding" noise - you can hear it over the engine if you stand about ten feet from the car. I've checked that the fuel sender isn't touching the bodywork - it just seems a very noisy pump.

I can't believe its supposed to be this loud - does it look like I've got a faulty pump?

Cheers
Mark

ive never known an in tank pump to be as loud as you have described.

are you sure its fitted correctly into the fuel sender assembly, and then also fitted correctly into the actual tank?

id just guess that its resonating against something else which in turn is making it sound alot louder than normal.

what pump have you gone for, '023' by any chance?

Hi Mate,

I'm pretty sure it's fitted OK - I checked and double checked it before bolting the tank back on. The resonating aspect did cross my mind - and I made a quick check to make sure that nothing was touching. I initially thought that one of the fittings could be touching the boot floor and making that vibrate but it doesn't look like it - it's quieter in the boot than it is underneath...

The pump is a Bosch 003. I was quite impressed how well it fitted - my old sender leaked which is why I had to take it all apart and replace the pump. Now the leak is fixed but it makes this awful noise.

I hate cars sometimes...

Cheers

I've heard of 003 pumps cavitating as they simply flow too much..

I've fitted a Walbro this WE, it makes less noise than the old one. Maybe you make a mistake fitting it ?

Cheers for your help - I can't find any figures for the flow rate of an 003 pump to compre it against the others - does anybody know?

I've been out and looked at it again this evening. The pump intially starts off with an intermittant ZUZ...ZUZ...ZUZ which gets louder and more continuous after the car has running for a few minutes. It sounds a a motor bearing kind of noise - could this be down to cavitation?

I have a 003 in tank pump suppling an 044 external pump.

The 003 needed spacing on the sender plate, and is absolutly quiet.

You can hear the 044 pump tho over the engine as I have it fitted in a sealed stainless box in the boot with a swirl pot and filter

Forgot to mention I was using the same 003 pump on the standard fuel set-up and it was still quiet as a mouse

All fixed - it turned out the pump got noisier as it got hotter. I got it swapped for another 003 and its perfect now.

Cheers for all your help!
