Default RS turbo fuel pump problem/wiring

Hi,

The car has been sat for 3 years and just installed a new engine, the fuel pump just clicks but won’t spin. only getting 9v when pump should prime.

got 12v into relay (big red wire) when I link the red wire to the red/black wire to bypass relay pump just clicks and doesn’t spin and just shows 9v???? Blowing my mind, please help desperate to hear the new engine run.

cheers

From ex Auto sparks [ retired now 13 years ] fully conversant with Bosch "K & KE" system...What you have hear is the Pump is " locked up...siezed "...when you bridge the Relay out, the Pump draws 9 amp normal [ if 044 pump fitted then 10 amp ]...the 12v gets "loads up" hence your getting 9 volt...so the pump is Duff...but watch there is no "Rust debre" in the Tank, as for sure the Tanks rust in the inside over the years....removing the Pump should show this, so dont fit new Pump untill new tank fitted, of course it can be the pump has just siezed !!...hope of help. thanks Peter, you was 100% on the money. What was throwing me was I’d bought a new pump off eBay and was giving me exactly the same issue as the one id swapped it for….. this afternoon I tried on a really old Bosch pump from my spares and worked no problems at all. I’ll send the duff pump back and just buy a Bosch 1. Thanks again Peter.

Twice bought new fuel pumps thinking they were the problem. Not run for years.
Couple of wires to a battery and few clouts with a rubber hammer, both sprang to life.
Same deal with the pump to my Charge Cooler.

You may well have Rust inside the Tank....many owners hear have had this problem as the rust jams up the Fuel pump, The tank needs replacing as a complete cure, if you do this remember to put 10 lts of petrol in after ....not just 5lts....as the fuel pick up in tank is 10mm above the bottom of tank...have come across this Pump problems hear over the years...the tanks rust on the inside over the long years now...look good on outside. best i can help. Peter

Thanks again Peter, were old pumps that sat on the car with the old tank. New tank on and new pump but sat for a while and still the stupid design of the injectors. Four new sets later, might find 4 that work.
Working along good advice you have given in the past Found a method of back flushing these and the amount of crap comes out, makes you wonder if the fuel filter and the filters in the fuel distributor
are just a waste of time?

OK i see now you have new Tank....seems all the system needs flushing through....ie....fuel lines....metering head....injectors..etc....you can do this yourself by removing all petrol from Tank...and useing injector cleaner [ lots ] ...and use the pump on car to clean through ....ive wrote before on this...will write again if not sure....after the cleaning a NEW fuel filter should be fitted.
