Cosworth Rear Hub & Carriers
I'm looking for some help on Rear Hub & Carrier fitment. Pretty new to this so please bear with me.
I've got the rear end from a Sierra Cosworth 1990 4x4 in a Kitcar. The offside rear wheel bearing just went, and in the process has damaged the Hub and the Stub so i'm trying to find replacements. Ford don't have any Stub listed due to age, and i'm even struggling online.
Does anyone know if any other models will fit it ? ie Sierra XR4i, 4x4, Granada.
Don't know if it makes any difference but I've got solid rear discs, not vented.
Sorry if i've left out any obvious info. Any help will be great - thank you.

Are you John?
The 4x4 hubs I think were a little different. There were solid rear discs 2wd and then 4wd vented but I think the XR 4x4 used solid. Mk motorsport can do billet hubs I think.
I am in Lindford btw
Solid discs at rear will need 4x4 XR carriers and calipers

Thanks for your reply. I'm not John, no. Name's Adrian. You're only just round the corner from me then.
So unlikely that XR4x4 Hubs will be the same as my Cosworth 4x4 ? I read elsewhere that the 4x4 was vented rears, so not sure why mine are solid. Possibly due to the lightweight, so not needing vented?
I have found someone making the Hub either Aly Billet (£180 pair) or Steel Billet (£280 pair) but then i'm struggling to find ANY Stubs at all unless 2nd hand and unknown condition.
A bit loathe to go 2nd hand Hub and Stub incase they are excessively worn like mine, as they're still £170.
Was due to goto Goodwood Soft-top Sunday 1st May in it, but no chance now sadly.
Thanks again.

2wd and 4wd cossie hubs are the same along with anything sierra which has disc brakes.
Only difference is the cossies run 273 solid or vented discs(calipers are different. Xr 4x4 run 257mm or253mm discs (i have had a drink lol)
Hope this helps. Any more info ask tomorrow when i am more human.

as far as i know, the rear hubs actually vary between 'normal' sierra models and cosworth models (caliper spacing was actually done on the hub rather than the carrier). you can however find cosworth hubs on the ford scorpio (bug eye type), hope that helps!
I found Sierra solid discs on the back of my pug 205 and I was struggling to get the mt big brake kit on so I bought 4x4 hubs, 4x4 callipers and carriers and that sorted it. I bought the hubs and stubs from Gary at RS cosworth breakers in Portsmouth, he is on here and generally can pick out good quality 2nd hand stuff if you tell him what is needed.
I got beech hill garage to press in the new bearings after I sand blasted them and painted them.
Good to know you are around the corner. Jon from Altis tools in Lindford has my old 4x4 diff and Geoff Bennet has helped him mount that in to his 7 kit car.

I've measured the Solid Discs and they are 273mm Costina, so does this mean I can definitely source either 2wd or 4wd Sierra Cossie Hubs & Stubs to replace and fit mine?
Sounds like Gary at RS Breakers is my next call to make.
Good to know that Beech Hill Garage can help fit the Bearings - thanks Caddyshack. Did you Sandblast yours yourself ?
Lastly, Incase I have to go this route.... would any of you have worries about replacing the Hubs with Aly Billet ones in terms of strength ?

I'm not sure on the stub, it might have a different pcd for the driveshaft on a 2wd Cosworth. Apart from that the hub and hub carrier from the 2wd and 4x4 cosworth are the same. In fact these parts from the Scorpio 24v (bug eye) are also the same and probably much easier and cheaper to get.
If the stub is from a 4x4 Cosworth any Granada mk3 stub will fit. I wouldn't be worried about second hand items, I have never seen these break.

Yes, blasted them myself, you are quite welcome to pop round and do yours here though.
Have you seen these, not sure which type they are? https://passionford.com/forum/ford-r...-for-sale.html
The rear bearing carriers on the non cosworth spec, disc brake Sierra are different, as the holes for the caliper to mount to are lower to compensate for the lesser diameter disc they used (calipers are the same as solid disc cosworth though)
The hub face if 4 stud is the same across the range of rear disc Sierra's inc cosworth, the stub shaft depends on whether you have 100mm driveshaft joints or 108mm driveshaft joints. 2wd cossie was 108mm, 4x4 and the rest of the sierra range if they had discs were 100mm
I have a pair of as new bearing carriers here from a 2 litre 4x4 sierra if of use. They are fitted with new bearing seats but no bearings. they all use the same Granada spec bearings.

Thanks Paul for clearing that up
I'd had a few to many last nite.
So i am guessing the hub bearing surfaces have rotational damage due to bearing seizing????
Toby, you would have had the 253mm non cosworth rears on yours hence why your calipers would not reach even with the new spacers again just a guess.

Costina, yeah the offside is the damaged side. Massive excess wear in the Hub Carrier where the Bearing seized and caused rotational damage. The new bearings I bought just slide in and have space to rattle in situ!
I'm a little embarrassed by my lack of knowledge
The hand written parts receipt (from previous owner and 13 years ago now), despite it listing my rear end parts as '4x4 1990 Sierra Cosworth' might have been a 2wd Cosworth (I have solid rear Discs, not vented like the 4x4 has).
However, if I am understanding the replies correctly, it makes absolutely no difference whether I buy 2wd or 4wd Cosworth Hubs and Hub Carriers because they are identical?
Paul, your Hubs you have... are they from a Cosworth 4x4 or XR4x4 ? I don't think the latter will fit, but i'm not sure?
I think I have added some confusion, sorry. Just so i'm clear on terminology:
These are like the Hubs & Hub Carriers I have:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=co...gjRMqYcOKaM%3A
I thought the Hubs were called Stubs. So I think i'm wrong there. So there's nothing wrong with my Axel Stubs.
The Hub itself is apparently also damaged, but i'm not convinced. The new bearing slides onto the Shaft 15mm then gets tight, as I expect it should do, and will need persuading into place.
Is that an issue ? There is light scoring and discoloration on the first 15mm (that it slides easily on) due to where it got so hot.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks again to those replying with help.

Ok so you will need hub carrier from either a 2wd or 4x4 cosworth as they use 273mm discs in solid or vented form.
Yes the bearings are a press fit into carriers(you could use green loctite too belt and braces!!!)
The hubs/stubs are also a press fit.
Post up some pics of yours.
Gary rs breaker on here will have some. Side is not important its only the shaft which is sided.

Thanks a lot Costina.
I'll ring Gary at RS Breakers. Wondering if I can just buy one side Hub and Carrier rather than both sides?
Some photos of mine. What do you think about the fact the end of the Hub Stub is discoloured and the Bearing slides on that 15mm easily. Then is tight after that. Need replacing? Also a 10mm long 1mm deep score in it (just visible in photos)

On the Hub yes, the bearing slides on the shaft easily for 15mm, then is tight and would need pressing into place. I thought that was normal and 'ok'. However 2 places i've taken it to for a 2nd opinion have told me it shouldn't be used as that 15mm of shaft has worn too far.
In the Hub Carrier the Bearing sits in place and has plenty of space around the edge to move. It's a really really loose fit.

What's the tolerance on the Hub Stub? If the new Bearing slides on easily the first 15mm of the shaft (with no wobble on the shaft), then it's a tight fit and will need pressing on the remainder of the shaft. Sound like that's still use-able ?
I don't get what your saying I was talking about the stub? If the bearing slides on it without any wobble use it! When it's all torqued up its going anywhere. Both my rear stubs side into the bearings without a press

Are you saying the beating races move about in the carrier? If so yes that's scrap but the stub if the inner race still slides over it fully into position use it. If it needs a little tap that's fine once torqued up it won't move
Ok, new Hub Carrier needed then.

But when you buy one it will come as a unit.
I think we are naming parts differently lol your talking about the end of the drive shaft as the stub. I'm talking about the shaft the bearings sit over on the hub as flange as the stub lol

You have lost me now lol the stub slides up the middle of the bearings. The bearing inner races side over the stub

Part 1) My Hub Carrier (photo 2) is knackered (bearing is a very loose fit). Need a new Hub Carrier.
Part 2) My Hub (photo 4) allows a new bearing to slide up the shaft 15mm then it will need banging on, which it seems is normal practice and not an issue? My question was asked because 2 places I took it to said that the bearing should not slide on that shaft by hand at all, and that it would be to loose.
Part 3) My Stub (aka Axel Stub) is fine.

In case the hub carrier and hub are damaged I would try to get these parts from a frog eye Scorpio 24v, as these are both the same and quite easy to get (at least here in Holland).
So to clarify before the op gets totally confused.
Stub= shaft with splines either lh or rh thead.
Hub= part which holds disc then wheel
Carrier= holds brake caliper and bearings and bolts onto lower arm.
Correct but if you buy one off a car you won't know what side it is untill you strip it. The nuts had different colour nyloc inserts to denote what side. But most are prob aftermarket.

Stub: I don't need. Mine is absolutely fine.
Hub: Sounds like no-one has a concern that the bearing slides on the shaft initially then needs a whack. Garage gave me dud info. Reuse mine.
Carrier: Need a new one. Get from Cossie 2wd or 4wd as they're the same.
What's the chances I can just buy the Offside Carrier on it's own (or with Hub too) or do these always get sold as "nearside and offside" together?
before you go and buy a new hub assembly, make sure that the bearings that you are trying to fit are the correct ones. do you have a part number? did the old bearings just fall out, or was it tight to get apart?
Yeah I checked the Bearings as soon as the Garage said the ones i'd supplied were too loose. From E.C.P Part 628590220. SKF make.

Pretty sure they are correct. The old bearing seized and caused a lot rotational damage to the Hub Carrier. It was in so many pieces it was mushed to bits and rusted to hell.
