Hi guys,

uprated my suspension, and handling of my 170, as thats where the biggest potential lies when modding the restricted 170. already have k&n cone filter and dreamscience unit, with race 97 induction map loaded,

just what to get the best out of her, so i was thinking of a performance coil pack and leads, plus 67mm cfm throttle body, can any one recommend any more bolt on bits to free up a few horses, and increase low down power, or have any experience with the pre mentioned planned mods??

i had a 67mm cfm throttle body fitted to my ST170 plus a full cat back system with a k&n
typhoon air filter 10mm performance leads which was plenty and was good for 185bhp you wont get much more out of them

 

Vernier pulley on the exhaust side is meant to give the biggest bang for bucks. Sure they say to run it retarded 3 degrees. Not a lot more you can do without going forced induction

 

Vernier pulley is meant to be the best power mod, 6 degrees is supposedly meant to see 10bhp, just waiting for mine to turn up so I can do cambelt and vernier

 

i think the car needs a tune to cope with those mods

 

Nope, it's a bolt on mod, no other tune needed.

 

The vernier pulley on the exhaust cam is said to be one of the best 'bolt-on' mods you can do - potentially releasing up to around 10bhp. But for the best results it will need an hour or so's tuning on a dyno so debateable whether it's a bolt-on mod. Uprated coil pack and leads is a waste of money, arguably the same with the 67mm throttle body unless you are going forced induction (ST170 throttle body is already 65mm which is bigger than the standard 2.0 litre).

They're a very well tuned engine from the factory and quite difficult to get more power out of without drastic mods like forced inductions or ITBs. Most of the crap you can buy which would be reasonably good on the standard 2.0 litre won't make much positive difference on the ST170.

 

iv not long done the exhaust vernier and yes it is a great mod for the money if you can do it yourself.i full beleive its 10bhp quicker.

i havent had no rolling road set up, i just went for the general opinion of -6degrees retarded and it works a treat. i dont think a rolling road is needed as -6 seems to be the given rule so personally i wouldnt waste your money on that. on the st170 facebook club a guy had his set up on dyno and -6 gave him best results.

 

-6 degrees is fine as a starting point but what gets results on one engine won't give the same results on every other engine. Hence i said - for the best results - it will need an hour or so on the dyno, probably less actually as it's only 1 cam to tune up. I had Chris Todd swing a pair of Piper cams in my 1.8 Zetec and gained around 8hp and 7ft/lbs of torque in an hour's dyno time so don't doubt there are decent gains to be had. I definitely wouldn't call it a bolt-on mod though.

 

By bolt on mod I mean it doesn't require other mods eg; remap and tbs, to see gains.
