Default Engine coughed a big end.

Hi All

After nearly a 12 month minor resto/fixing all the little issues, getting it MOT'd and tuned the blood thing let go within 30 minutes of it being on the road lol.

I couldn't believe it..... So, to cut a long story short i've found the big end shells on the No1 piston have span. I can see the engine in its past has had a lot of money spent on it, ARP bolts everywhere, all the pistons have been balanced, the pressure plate, clutch, crank, front pulley have been balanced etc.

After reading a few articles on the net about cosworth engine's im wondering whether to put better/longer conrod's in whilst the engine is open. I know there are various different brands out there but if I do go down this route then it'll only be for piece of mind rather than out and out power.

1) what are peoples thoughts please
2) who is the best person/company to purchase from.

Kind Regards

Depends on the spec of the car but the standard YB rod is a very strong part so unless you're going for silly power, I'd leave them.

Yeah afew of the reports ive read say to leave them.

A few of the tech articles also say buy longer ones to stop whats happen happening.

I think your right though, best to just reshell the standard units and put it back together.

Thanks guys for your info

Yep,
After taking advise from here I asked the engine shop to check for ovalness in the rod and your right.... a new rod is required.

They've also suggest the fault was from oil starvation so i'll change the oil pump, pick up pipe and pump drive as a precaution.

Ive also had the blocked decked and the same amount removed from the pistons to retain the same compression.

So, Could anyone please offer advise on which rods to buy and from whom please?

Thanks

buy second hand standard rods if you find a set available, just get them checked at your machine shop. Otherwise, pick any set off ebay, they all come from the same place!

standard yb rods are good up untill you get to crazy power(more than your likely to ever need)
just buy standard 2nd hand rods, perfectly good and useable
no need for fancy rods on a yb of that kinda spec,
aint needed untill well over 500bhp or unless your changing the length etc

Cheers for that.

Im looking at buying a set from Mat Lewis Motorsport at Ł400

He states there balanced and good for 600 horse which is more than enough for me.

longer rods are used for more revs mainly! just replace the damaged rod with what you had if you were happy with the car as it was did it damage the crank?

Use standard rods unless you plan to change the rod/stroke ratio for some reason.

A standard set of rods is better than any Ł400 set of rods at standard length all day long in my opinion.

If you do buy standard, make sure you buy the right weight of course, as there are more than one.

Again thank you for the info guys.

I would prefer to keep the rods standard but cost is also an issue.

I don't think id feel happy in putting a used set of rods into my engine especially when you add the other costs of machining, gaskets etc.

Anything second hand with the word 'Cosworth' in front or behind it usually cost not much less than the new equivalent and you would hope your getting a better product built with better tolerances on new kit than old used kit.

The crank has already been ground once to .25 so now it will be taken to .50

Thanks

NIGHTMARE

I have just been informed by the machine shop that though the crank has been ground before to 0.25. The crank grinding company states that them cant grind the crank again because of the application.
I have mentioned that cosworth cranks can go to 0.50 and still be safe but the company doesn't advise that. When I speak to other machine shops and mention the crank grinding company they all say there the best at what they do and take there advise.

So, does anyone have a Cosworth crank for sale which is crack free, straight and stock or advise me on any other options

Thanks
Andrew
