cheap drift cars
sierra, capri's, bmw's and mx5's seem to be easy to find, the 740 and 200sx seem to be harder to find
my guess would be to strip it all (including aircon) but both front seats and dash, get rid of abs and powersteering depending on if it may cost quite abit if they got it, if not great, then lower it, uprate the brakes and weld the diff cause i don't think they will have lsd's unless one of the bmw's like 325/330 and some 5series may do, but might not be one for the money
make it light but also try to balance the car aswell by adding abit of weight right to the back of the car not as much as took out tho should be better than keeping all the weight spread through ?

Sierras are shit fro drifting without a lot of steering mods. been there and tried it
you can pick up an old mx5 and have the diff welded for about £500 good out the box beginner drift car!
200sx are good with a welded diff, but cost more buy and insure.
again, bms need a bit of work to get some decent lock.
as if you going to practice properly, then you will crsh, so the cheaper the car the better. imo id be looking at bog std cheap mx5 and have the diff welded.

anything will 'drift' if you make it, i had a 1.8TD p100 pickup truck and on wet roads you were hard pushed to keep its arse in line.
do you want the car to do some DWYB days, just sliding around roundabouts and using as a daily or is this a hypothetical situation?

I bought a mk2 mx5 a couple of months ago to have a go at drifting.
Paid £800 off ebay with 12mths tax 6 mths tax with 80,000 on the clock.
Insured it a couple of days ago for £600 so all in it comes in under your budget.
It's light, nible, loves to go sideways and everything works!
I looked round for a while and anything with a name to it came at a price...

Can't beat a mk1 MX5 for that budget, pick an okay one up for 5-600 quid, weld the diff, couple of cheap buckets and harnesses, then go up the pub with the leftovers!
Wouldn't even touch the engine, 1.6 or 1.8, both will happily skid if you've got the know-how.

even if it was a mx5 ?
looks interesting
really like the mk1, think its because of the pop up headlights
ahaha
i think its time to have a word with the father

sadly the price of anything potentially driftable has now gone thru the roof due to the drift scene. mx5s are still the cheapest option, but even the price of those has been creeping up! if u are patient and shop around for bargains, u can land on s13s and s14s for decent money. my mate just bought a pretty solid and very standard s14a for a grand, bargain! and another mate picked up a slightly tatty s13, but with plenty of suspension mods and an sr20de lump on stand alone for 1700 i think, complete basic drift package there

i say i found two 200 sx's one turbo about 1200-1300 quid and a not turbo for around 900 but both auto's
I built an E36 328i coupe last year to use at DWYB, diff welded, stripped out, 2 bucket seats, 4 point harnesses, exhaust, filter and a remap, lowered on springs with Mtec shocks. Goes sideways before youve turned the key! taxed mot'd and ready to go, in your budget. Its a mint 2 0wner car with 95k on the clock and full dealer history!

I'd go for the 325 over the 328 as its a tougher lump and has nigh on identical performance from the box, their nearly 200 horse anyway so you should be able to drift on that no bother.
Others to consider are the Volvo 340 range and even the 240's,5 series beemers are cheap as chips even 7 series now.
Oooh just thought,we all forgot about mercs!!!
A nice c230 supercharged would be ideal and are dirt cheap right now,not always the easiest to find in manual but tough mechanically and loads of rotten ones out there to rape for bits.
Seen a few on retro rides well under a grand.
Not sure if a 318is would have enough oomph?
There's two over on retrorides for £550 right now,one looks a pretty car as well.

mercs are a bit of a no no, as u say most are autos and manuals are pretty rare, but then the issue is the manual boxes in mercs just shit themselves lol
e36 bmw with a 325 lump is a pretty cheap entry level drifter these days, its just that even the price of these has gone up massively due to drifters. still relatively cheap, but not as cheap as they were a while back! the main plus side is, if u spank it and destroy it, u still have the 325 lump n transmission, so u just transfer that into a much cheaper n easier to find 316 or sumthin n start over again

the 'eunos' MX5 imports have LSDs as standard and due to often having no history with them, no underseal and often shagged paintwork from Japan dont fetch as much.
worth mentioning.

Nothing wrong with power steering on a drifter.. May need a cooler if the fluid boils but other than that's I'd keep it.. I ran a sierra with welded diff for a year, was pretty shit tbh as far as a drift car goes, and I also had a 200sx for 6 months that was far better std than the modded sierra.
Unfortunately with six, skyline etc is the insurance kills it.. Mx5 are a very very good handling car if you can out up with the gay/hairdresser jibes. Even the 1.6 motor has a enough poke if you have some skill.. People think you need power to drift, you need skills more!!

My dad has an MX5 Eunos. 1.8 & LSD standard.
Great at sideways action and I think he only paid £800 over two years ago!
Tidy motor and great fun to drive, just not overly quick for a two seater.
Mx5 all day long in my opinion mate.

The ABS are should be easy to remove, (most likely just needs a fuse removing), you need a professional to 'de-gas' the A/C though, this isn't something to be messed with if you don't know what you are doing and have the correct equipment for doing so!
I think the only difference between 325 and 8 is the engine I would have thought, the latter is 193 HP as standard (assuming E36).
