not been here for ages and thought id drop an update on the car.
had the car for 20 years or so , between 2008 and 2010 i striped it to nothing and rebuilt it all be it a bit different to the original look.
turns out the car was fairly popular and classic ford ran a small feature on it and its appeared here and there through other mags too.
then last year i took it off the road as it was running like a pig.
sounded good but was suffering big carb issues so i sorned it.
long story short i started gathering up some turbo parts.....seemed like a good idea at the time
its a t104a single turbo ,janspeed conversion all be it with a few "made up" bits. took it off the road last august and started trying to get the turbo on around march this year. manifold never fitted properly, and there were space issues all over the place but it all went on in the end.
the bigest pain was swapping the sump over single handedly with no lift.
a mate reconed i could raise the ebngine engough to do it without removing the engine.....turns out he was right.
id like to point out that yes if you undo the engine mounts and take off the dizzy cap you can ideed raise the engine high enough from below but its the most poxy job ive done on the car to date.
everything went on eventually, fuel pump hit the bin as it was in the way and a new fuel supply was fitted and the throttle cable was modifed a tad to suit.
then like a wally i sliced my hand open ........off work for a month, plastic surgery to reattatch tendon etc and then phyiso kept me off work......so i used the opportunity to carry on with one hand...itd be rude not to use the time
big day came and unbelievably it fired first time.then sprayed oil everywhere (thanks to the muppet on ebay who sold me it) so a new one was gotten. engine bay is as empty as it can be and apart from a few nigglies the "nailed together tubby build" is almost done.
still need to sort an air fuel gauge, silencer and run a decent fuel pump feed and a couple of fiddly things but as soon as they done its off to a tuners.
the turbo its running is a rotamaster???? yeah its as old as it sounds but was reconditioned by turbo technics. the carb is an su off a rover sd1 and is bolted directly onto the inlet of the turbo. no intercoolers,no boost controller.......not much at all ,just hope its faster than it was before all the agro.
anyway, heres where im at now,its in reverse order as i copied and pasted it from another site im on.
It is indeed, borrowed it to get the manifold studs out the head, handy bit of kit it was too.
The janspeed turbos are all like this from what I've seen but every conversion I've found has been a rover v8 one.dead simple set up but I have no idea how good it will be though.
Sounds bloody awsome but there's no exhaust on the car yet, gonna stick a shallow silencer on it and fire it out the side. Would have been a better idea to bolt it all on a different engine and then drop it in but Im working alone so not always so simple.gotta find alternative ways to do stuff.
thanks guys,i built the car as an attention getter for a granada club i set up with a few mates. got in a few mags along the way too which was all good too.
it was built to show not all granada owners wore caps and towed trailers.
it handles very well ,runs straight as a die and stops good too ....sounds nice as well.
not everyones kind of thing but i never built it for anyone else. there arent many moddded mk2 granadas around so i thought id start the ball rolling.....and its still not finished. the dash is almost done which only really leaves (until it gets a shakedown run) a silencer with a side exit pipe, lambda sensor,a power feed to the fuel pump,a battery and choke cable to be ready for setting up and mot.
itll be going to a proper tuners to set it up correctly once i can drive it. ive got no idea how much more grunt itll have as it seems no one anywhere has this crude/basic turbo set up on a for v6.
if its around the 170 mark thatll be loads better than it was....if its more ill be bloody happy and will get it up the 1/4 mile.
here it is ticking over the last time it went back on the road, curb feelers were so i didnt mess up the sides getting it out the parking space it was in.theyre gone now!!
handles and locks are black now too but its pretty much the same to look at
so seeing as the electric window switch swap around was a no no,(different connections for the rear window connectors ) ive done this instead
all soldered and crimped joints too
...........not typical me as anyone whos watched me work before will tell you ,but i need everything to be 100% now
so heres my revamped and "guts ripped out" drivers side dash vent as of 5.30 this morning
new adaptor arrived.............nope,just gave in and welded the damn thing on
righty then, rewired the switch so its now fed from what turned out to be a split 12v feed from the aux fuse box. real handy as far as im concerned. id even brought a volt meter home but upon inspection it was obvious that the switched power supply was shared over two terminals at a time all the way along the fuse box
being me,i didnt bother checking and went straight in with the crimper and connected the feed
anyway, the choke cable is now much more secured and will have a tidy up cover made to go over the top.
the exhaust is getting there...........................slowly
the wiring has been tidied right up and the fuel pump supply is all in and runs from the ignition now and lights up red......just like the dash ert
inside is as good as done, stereo is teh only thing left. ive left two tails for the o2 sensor but will just get it set up and sorted first, ill get the sensor done when the exhaust is made from staniless later next year.
ive replaced butterfly nut today too which has taken ages to do..........or at least remember to do
while i was playing ive drilled a pair of small holes in the foot well kick panel on the n/s. the fuse that now sits there is for the pump,i know the aux fuse box is fused .......obviously but better safe than sorry.
as for the spider,i guess its got all dead waiting to see the car move again...............................
anyway,heres where im at
the light at the end of this long tunnel is finally showing now so it should be a sweeeeeeeeeeeet summer of old ford cruising for me and the family. no more mods after its done, nothing at all !!!!!!!!!!!!
I likt the turbo and carb setuo, but what did you do with the ignition? To retard it? A friend of mine is trying to find out if he can turbo his low compression pinto with a turbo and a carburator, no intercooler becouse of the suck trough setup, but what about the ignition? I ditched my saab vacuum thingie ages ago becouse my v6 2.8 is setup for megasquirt and a single t3 turbo
I had planned on making a charge cooler but was told is have the fuel mixture condensing.and making pools of fuel in it so didn't bother. As for ignition,I've got no idea at all.I've got this far with guess work as the parts came loose and most was in a state.its been a case of trial and error so far.I looked at a turbo technics one that was on eBay but ive got no idea what I need.like i said, its been guess work and trial and error.I did read that water inj would be a good move but I just want it running first before starting anything more confusing.the zorst is.nearly sorted now so its almost ready to pre mot and get to a decent tuners.no point me trying to set it up....my only tools are a welder,a hammer a breaker bar and a tube of silicon.
Ecu? Nope.........still running a duraspark ignition module it had from new. Please don't tell me it won't work. It runs and revs....obviously its not moving though as its been on the same ramps for a year and a half now.
thanks mate, ive had the tinted covers for years now,i like em as it
was a real 80's thing and kind of a period feature.if i can source some clear ones ill yellow film tint them instead though.
if im totally honest here,i wasnt aware id need to retard the dizzy.
you may well have stopped me buggering my engine , massive thankyou
tools came out to play and so did the new exhaust.....but not the red one i bought a fortnight ago
fitted spot on and is so damn shallow its almost the same as the original box. the baffle is riffled and the box seems really well made so im pretty chuffed.
ive cut the old middle section off as it was a complete pain to get on in the first place thanks to the car needing to be way up in the air so the tail end could be cork screwed into place over the rear arms. just the tail pipes to remove now and a 45 degree sweep out the side to drop in.
unbeknown to me until i was told on passion ford, i need an ignition retarder too....how ive got this far amazes me.................
note to self "stick to things you understand in future!!!"
so now im googling like a muppet trying to find out how a micro dynamics retarder ems6 goes on
any advice on this would be a great help. if anyone has one for sale at a small price would be even better
ive also seen that i can get a vacume unit from an early saab but i really dont needs to be getting lost in a retro fit gogle hit and miss mess right now. im way too close to being ready to start new messing around. i need the car up and running now.
heres the new exhaust being fitted, still needs a hanger but thats noty exactly a problem
had a nice break over xmas but the tablets im on dont seem to do anything so ive not been feeling very car motivated to say the least.
that said, i did manage to wire up the stereo all bar the amp switch and teh ,main battery feed but the wires been made, just needs poking through the bulkhead and conecting.
while in the garage i tried to work out the best way forward regarding the exhaust. seemed to be getting no where fast and the agro was gaining momentum
after a rethink and a bit of bending and cutting i think ill be able to route the exhaust into the existing rear end. ive done some crude measuring and it turns out that the rear pipe just where the twin pipes join by the rear axle widens out to 2". thats the diameter of the new system so a connecting flexi joint now been ordered and hopefully it wil all pull together. ill be able to use the rear hanger too which will mean no new extra hanger would be required.
i was given oil this ages ago for the carb.......makes sense to use the right oil for the job
hoping to get to the bolt shop later, got my box of nuts and bolts in the boot so hopefully ill have a bag of brass nuts by the time i get home.......been trying to get to the shop for months now, stupid really as i could walk there from my house in 20 minutes! just always seems to be something more important to do.
list of jobs left to do,no more than a mornings messing id say.....
1. fit brass nuts on inlet and turbo-10 minutes
2. connect the power feed to the fuel pump to the wire thats 12" away from it-5 minutes
3. join exhaust together-30 minutes
4. spray ns engine bay -5 seconds
5. wrap the exhaust-30 minutes
6. have a pre mot check over underneith and buy any ness parts- 1 hour max
7. clean garage floor under the car and get the old girl off the bloody ramps and back on terra firma-10 minutes
8. take all the rubbish out the boot and off back seat-30 minutes
9. book car into a decent tuners for setting up..............
anyone recomend a good place near gravesend in kent????????
had a mad burst on the old girl last night
fitted copper coated steel nuts onto the crossover pipes joint, lucky as on nut was loose.poxy job as you need fingers like E.T to hold a spanner on the rear nut while spannering the bottom one quarter of a turn at a time thanks to the narrow gap there.
fuel pump wiring was extended into the spare wheel well and run through a short length of hose for protection from the elements. i fired a load of silicon into the hose for good measure too. all connected up now though.
crude heat shield should be enough to keep tail pipe heat away from the pump too.
rear seat in now empty except the atari and tv screen but theyll be out soon as theyre just surplus weight.
front exhaust clamp was turned around instead of cut just so i didnt get sparks all round the cluttered garage.
found my custom airbrushed "limey" air box too. a good mate painted it for me but obviously thats now surplus.
heres a pic of where ive had to work ,14" inches of clearance. seems even less when your trying to swap a sump over without removing the engine from the bay
rear flexi has been glooped and is clamped down too.
rear window has been de-club stickered,20 years of ownereships meant lots of stickers and some from sites/clubs that have folded. rear bespoke rs sticker looks nice though
ive got a sample bolt from the turbo oil return flange too,ill try to get me a pair of matching shorter bolts on the way home.
took ages to get the old girl back off the ramps but its done now and if im honest, i'd forgotten just how low she sits just from being dropped onto the garage floor the chassis rails are 5". guess that'll drop when i move too
anyway,heres a pic bomb!!
little update (and vid link further down)
booked the car in for setting up so started getting the banger ready.
fired up first poke and with an adjustment to the throttle idle screw it was running constantly.
that said, we had issues
obviously there was gonna be smoke as any spilt fulid on rapidly becoming hot parts were gonna get burned off but jesus,...........
it all went wrong real fast.
within minutes I became like Red Adare,we had oil weeping from the turbo oil feed on top of the turbo,it was dripping out the ebay bought t piece that screws into the block and if that wasnt enough to really get me angry it started weeping out from the o/s rocker cover too!!!!!!!!!
just for the record here, the 99p shop sells a snide version of vanish stain mouse. it gets oil off car parts and also hands really well too. just spray on and leave.
a quick call to som,e good mates in our granada club later and ive got a full set of rocker covers at the ready. turned out that amongst my granada parts hanging off ever drywall screw in the garage I had a spare new gasket. a smear of silicon and then the gasket was on. rocker refitted and all seemed ok. for some unknown reason if you look at the rocker cover holes, theres a hole missing on my engine?????theres a hole on the rocker cover and also one in teh gasket but its not there on the cylinder head???? seems stupid to me.
I pfte (or however it spelt) taped the oil feed into place and tightend the t piece and tried again.
rocker was ok and teh oil feed to tubby was good. still weeping from the t piece. ill pfte that during the week. the exhaust wrap was smoking a bit but once all the smokings finished I'm hoping things will calm down a bit.
not interesting at all but heres my sunday afternoon.............
I also found the 2.9 rocker bars too so once its all sorted ill get them on as well. aparently they have a wider surface area which I'm told is worth swapping over for. just need to swap the pedastals too as well ive been informed.doesnt mean a great deal to me but ill work that out when I get there
next day
ages spent under the oily banger....however we now have no leaks......yet anyway.got it running smooth too once it was warmed up as per vid. Sound ok in the flesh, just cameraphone sound quality is rubbish and its in the garage. Only having one silencer doesnt help much either.
VID LINK!!!
This eventually arrived from china or somewhere like that, once unfolded it was huge which is handy when your as useless at cutting straight lines as I am. really sticky and went on very well.....guese the true test will be when the cars running, wouldnt be suprised if it all fell back off
shame it didnt come in black though....still it should help protect the paint job Barney Sands in Ebbsfleet did for me a few years ago, still looks fresh now so id hate it to be heat stained.
Eventually got it to the dyno only to be told its not boosting at all. actually it was , the inlet pressure was atmospheric instead of vacume.turned out that the wastegate was siezed open and the tubby wasnt getting enough gas to spool properly. long story short,a new watsgeate was sourced, the welder came out and im now wearing a turbosport ultagate 38 jobbie. looks ok ,fits nice and hopefully ill have it pumbed in over xmas. still need a screamer pipe and some vacume tubing too.
getting there slowly..................
cheers mate, its getting there slowly. doesnt need a great deal now, just some vacume hose, some reconnecting and tightening up and a screamer pipe should see it ready again
update...................
wastegate elbow made at work, wasnt 100% right but a quick trim and its fine
Up at 4am like usual but working from home today so steamed through the work and hit the garage.theres not much help available anywhere with regards to the set up so im trying it my own way ....if it dont work try something else.
oil return shortened so the angle is more downward, vacume pipe runs out the rocker, through a catch can and then into the air filter.
the pipe inlet is from a fuel pump and the inner nut is (apart from bloody tight) held in place by the inner mesh of the filter so cant go anywhere it should . the oil pressure gauge lines been swapped over too now as well so all bar the o2 gauge and a quick once over to check all the bolts and nuts are tight id guess things are ...........................dare i say ready???
Forgot to post updates.... Absolute arse to get into the car Cage now has padding above both seats Twin air filters now on opposite side to the turbo. Turbo got a space jacket and thermostat now installed with an electric fan Climbing frame added Red dash still makes me smile
