I'm changing my old built up trailer for a new one. Thinking of buying new as the price of secondhand ones is not much less.
Its to put my 3 door sierra on for now, until my mk2 escort is finished.
Anyone seen ans good ones or recomend one.

Cant comment on the Ifor, but Brian James ones are great. Also heard from another guy, Fountain make good stuff.

Either way, IMO best option is a solid non-tilt bed with long ramps. It's lower, drives better and easier to get low cars on and off compared to a tilt bed.

14'6" bed should cover most cars. The 16' models are just huge.

Only one issue with a low bed and outboard wheels/mudgaurds, is if your car is very low you may not be able to get the doors open when it's on the ramp. So check that. Although doubt it would affect too many cars.

 

As you say,2nd hand car transporter are only slightly cheaper than a new one.I got a Brian James Clubman,with a tyre rack for 4 extra wheels and a storage box for 2 jerry cans.Best money I ever spent.Tows like a dream at 70mph (yes I know thats over the speed limit),is well built and its lite up like a Christmas treee at night with side marker lights and all.

 

I had an Ifor Williams 136hd but now have a Brian James A-Max which IMO is much better as it is a low bed and allows you to open the doors of the car on it without touching the mudguards. Also it has conceled pull out ramps. I had the folding towpole which allows it to fit in a standard garage.

he means the front (a) frame,it folds up out of the way,brian james are the best, hell of alot lighter than the heavy ivor williams,get a brian james,job done.

My one fits the Esc Cos comfortably and the s2 with ease, good thing also is as its covered so Mr Policeman don't know whats inside! Helps on the tow car side of things if your on the limit and also doubles up as a garage in the winter!!!

what you towing it with? you do know vosa are changing the rules and are enforcing operators licence for bigger trailers!

 

Towing with a car can slip through vosa. Vans can't.
I have a touran to tow with. The listed tow capacity is 1500kg. But there is now maximum tow weight for cars , just the 80% weight guideline.
Vosa are mainly doing people under the customs regulations, but not 100%. It is far harder for them to get average joe towing with a car. It's down to a police prosecution for that.
It's a very grey area that people have different story's about.

Also spotted the trailer for sale and as I said its not much more to buy a new one.

 

I use a mates Brian James Clubman to pull the saph on. If you get it loaded right it's spot on using the Smax to drag it. (42 mpg too).

 

Sorry but cars DO have towing capacity limits! For instance my mk1 focus has a max towing capacity of 1200kg

Just out of curiosity .. how much would you say a average car trailer weighs? flat bed big enough to carry a average sized car...

I have a focus which can tow 1200kg .. the xr2 is 700kg so I would have 500kg to play with?

 

all this has been covered many times before but its not just the weight of th trailer to consider its the trailers plated MAM because even if the combined mass of car and trailer is under your tow cars limit if the trailer is plated for over then its still illegal. this of course assumes the trailer is plated, bit of a grey area though for home built trailers.

Well spoke to a nice man at Brian James and i'm getting a new trailer from them with it plated to match up with the Tourans max train weight. Works out at about 1700kg. 200kg over the tow weight but under the MAM, all 100% legal. Gives me about 1200kg for loading.
