Hi all,

My brother has a Fiesta ST150 and sometimes the gearbox lever goes stiff and is hard to get into gear. Im thinking its a synchro mesh but im not a gearbox specialist. Please could anyone give me any clue as to what the problem is and roughly how much to fix.

Has he ever fitted a Quick-Shift?

I had this, and then it wouldn't select 1st, 3rd, 5th..

2mins later and I had snapped the Gear Cable.

no, hes never fitted a quick shift. it only does it when the cars been running for a while and everything gets warmed but then again it doesnt do it all the time.

it might just be a stiff linkage that expands under the heat causing friction. when i get time ill have a propper look.

 

If you havent sorted it mate, mite be worth askin over on the Fiesta STOC. Think i saw on there a thread similar to this

My first thought would be the hydraulic fluid needs changing, should be done every 2 years just like brake fluid. also check the slave cylinder as they are prone to leaks on these.

 

might be of help to you but my friend had an 07 ST a few years back an when the car got warm or done a few miles on the motorway you could get it out of gear an if you did it wasnt going back in... fine first thing in the morning an when cold took it to fords an the replaced the gearbox under warranty but he had to pay for clutch as he got stuck on motorway..

 

mines doing the same feels very stiff going into 3rd, already had a new box after the diff exploded

 

its a common problem mate, mine done the same thing. its just a nylon bush on the shift arm that needs to be greased up!

iv copied the guide from the fiesta stoc for you,

it says on the guide to ream the bush but i never i just emery papered the shaft on the gearbox that the bush slides over and copper slipped it up and its been fine ever since,

As some of you may be aware, ive been suffing with this problem for ages now, making the car almost undrivable at times. Replaced the cables on advice from ford, which made no difference. After a bit of investation(pulling things apart!) i found out it was the Shift arm's nylon bushes that had gone dry/expanding, causing them to tighten on the pivot shaft. Anyway heres the guide, it might be a bit pikey-ish, but it works!

1. Remove both plastic covers where the gear cables go tho the box. One will unclip off, the other requires 4x 8mm bolts to be unscrewed.

2. With both covers removed, press the button on the selector cable, and withdraw it from the ball joint on the selector shaft. Pull the shift cable off the shank on the shift arm(held on by a rubber bush, just pulls off).

3. Remove both cables from the bracket(the outer cable has a twist release mechanism, twist it and pull the cable from the bracket).

4. Now remove the spring E-clip holding the shift arm on it's pivot shaft, being carefull not to let it flirt off anywhere and loose it.

5. Carefully withdraw the shift arm off the pivot shaft, it will probably be extreamly tight(thus the problem). Try rocking it side to side and pulling it at the same time, eventually it will come off. The fact that it's that tight, is the root of the problem. Dont worry about the ball joint/bush of the shift arm that slots into the end of the selector shaft - it justs slides in and out(carefully stretch the boot of the ball joint over to allow removal).

6. With the shift arm removed, unscrew the pivot shaft from the gearbox, 22mm spanner fittment, be carefull not to damage the box.

7. The nylon bushes in the shift arm require reaming, or ever so slightly enlarging, i just used a drill with a drill bit the size as close as i could get to the diameter of the pivot shaft. Keep working the bushes until the pivot shaft slides nicely inside, being carefull not remove to much material from the bushes.

8. Once you are happy with the feel of the pivot shaft inside the shift arm(smooth), clean everything up and pack the shift arm bushes with plenty of grease/lube(i used copper slip). Screw the pivot shaft back into the box and tighten.

 

Hi guys,

Im having this problem in the wifes 1,4 tdci. I need a bit of help as I can see me trying this and hearing the whole gearbox hitting the bottom of the housing when I remove sometime

I take it from thepicture below I remove the link cables from the bronze arm. Then remove the circlip from the bottom of the bronze arm which will allow this to be removed?

Is it the bush on the removed bronze arm that needs to be greased or is it something further into the box?

Thats the one mate, just drill the bush out a wee bit not too much obviously, then fire it back on with lots of grease and it will be nice and smooth again!

 

Old thread but just helped me same problem told i needed new clutch,gearbox,cables etc etc fixed it with the above info now perfect thank you all involved

 

I had this problem it was the master cylinder behind the clutch pedal (leaking fluid) that's it easy to take out and fit a pain getting the clutch pedal back in tho.

 

Bought mine with this problem It's the arm on the front of the gearbox needing taken off and grease put on the pin that goes through it or drilled out in some cases.

Your best replacing the plastic square on the selector as it's only Ł5 from ford and wears out, we used to replace these a couple of times a year in the race cars

I had the same problem. When it was cold, the gear box was fine, but as it warmed it became really stiff. It's a just nylon bush. Really easy to sort, there are videos on youtube if you fancy a bash at it your self.
