Default Mondeo 1999 MK2 Rear Wheel Bearing..

Following on from this..

https://passionford.com/forum/genera...-accident.html

I still need to change the wheel bearing as the noise has got noticeablly louder, it sounds like the noise my old freelander made when the diff was knackered.

This is the replacment part( or so i believe it is the correct one) :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rear-wheel-bea...item335e29c243

Has anyone ever changed one? basically i just want to know how easy it is to do? im fairly competent with cars and tools, i have a decent 300 piece socket and spanner set, impact sockets, all 3 size ratchets, extensions and breaker bar, the only thing i dont possess is a torque wrench.. is it just a case of wheel off, hub nut off, drum off, bearing out and then reverse procedure to re assemble it?

Got to use the car to ferry 3 people 40 miles somewhere on new year eve then 40 miles back later on, i dont think theyll appreciate ending up in a hedge if i dont fix it..

Thanks

easy olk school set up,
just drum off and drift out the old bearing and outer race,
then as you say back together the same way,
just make sure you grease the bearing properly,
not he usual rub of grease round the outside of the bearings that most non pro's do

for me for not looking,
ignorewhat i just said,
drum off, then undo the hub nut and the full flange just pulls off,
i was thinking of the old escorts
but just makes it even easier for you,
the hub nut goes proper tight not tapered bearing type

think il put the spare steelie on and leave it on the floor when i try take the nut off stop it spinning the wheel cause you can access the hub nut through the centre of the steelie.. might take it apart tommorow just to see how it looks, think the parts about £40 might get one from motor factors.cheers

Once the hub nuts undone the hub pulls off, there will be a circlip to remove in most cases then the bearing WILL NEED PRESSING in and out, if you don't have a torque wrench then it just wants doing up very tightly, where abouts are you based??

Can be done with a drawer to pull new bearing into place very easy.

argh not again lol, i was told it wouldnt need pressing in, its only the front wheel bearings that need to be pressed in, so far ive been told just remove the hub nut and drum and the bearing and stud hub assembely slides out as one, then i was told it was held in with 4 torx 50 bolts, now a circlip, and now it needs to be pressed/drawn in/out.. arghh lol thanks guys, does anyone have a haynes manual? cheers

ok carl according to a haynes manual for a mk2 93 -99 mondeo

" the rear hub bearings are non adjustable and are supplied complete with the hub. it is not possible to renew the bearings separately for the hub "

hope this helps

it 100% the way i said above(the 2nd time lol)
i had 1 off not long ago doing shoes,
just pull drum off, then undo hub nut, the hub can then just pull off(might be tight)
but its that easy as long as it is the same as that ebay link

As said above, it's just a matter of unbolting the old one and putting on the new one.

HOWEVER (and this is a big however) my cousin recently did this and the bolts (Torx T50 if I remember correctly) were tight as fuck. He even broke my best torx socket.

Eventually he had to open them with hammer and chisel.

Might aswell try applying some heat. Or maybe you'll be lucky and they'll come out easily anyways...

Well i can say it took me all of 5 minutes to remove this...

The hub nut wasnt even tight, i managed to undo it with a normal ratchet by hand, no breaker bar needed, tapped the hub with the hammer, that came off, and a gentle pull on the hub bearing unit that came off too. Rang up the motor factor, he just sold the last one he had in stock, cant get hold of another one today, and i needed the car, so i reassembled it, only this time doing the hub nut with a breaker bar as tight as i could, no play in the wheel at all, and no untoward noises when spinning the wheel, the noise it makes when driving has all but gone aswell.. really confused. just ordered a new bearing off ebay anyhow. £32 posted.

Where are these torx bolts? I didnt see any? Hub nut was all i had to remove. Was suprised the job didnt go to shit lol.

Cheers
