pull the starter out and test it with a battery and a set of jump leads.

also does the engine turn over by hand ok?

i could be a few things, but testing the motor eliminates one thing at least.

it could be a miss match between the teeth on the starter and the teeth on the ring gear.

Did you swap all the ancillaries?I've had this before with that very engine,a totally seized alternator causing the v belt to jam up.it could be something easy like that,I cut the belt and it fired instantly but changing the alternator was a pig of a job, didn't help mine had aircon!!!

Iirc there is a pulley system between the alternator and the belts and pulleys which is held on the coupling with three bolts meaning you could just undo them and try it?

Iirc fella, the starter won't slot in and bolt up unless the teeth mesh?

Only reason i mentioned it is cos my one did the same thing as that but it acted like the engine was seized,I shit myself!!I cut the belt as the engine wouldn't turn at all even with a powerbar on the pulley.I took a guess on the belt but it was right and I've actually had this now on about 4 cars we had in the workshop and it was always something on the v belt drive.

Good idea i didn't think of that. An old engine I bought had obviously been whacked on the alternator which caused it to sieze. Check the engine rotates by hand....

i dont know about this application in particular, but the teeth dont normally mesh up until they try to turn it over normally, so the starter would bolt up ok. its only when the solenoid activates the gear on the starter moves into position

to the OP, does the engine turn over by hand as i asked earlier?
