Newly built PC question...Re: PROCESSOR (AMD 64 3000+)
Morning Peeps!!
Had a PC built for me last night with the above processor (not sure what motherboard I've got, but its definatly been matched to the processor)
we checked the BIOS and its running at 200mhz X 5 = 1000mhz
but its a 2GB processor and SHOULD be running at 2000mhz easily!!
we checked the PC in the office and that is running 133mhz x 13 = approx 1.7GB but that is a lesser processor than what i have!!?!?
we notished that his voltage was 1.7 compared to mine running at 1.5, not sure wether this makes any difference!!!
the MAXIMUM that the bios allows is 280mhz x whatever...
When you turn the PC on, the XP screen comes on, and the chips SAFE AND SOUND screen comes up showing it running at 2000mhz, but then within a second it drops to 1770 and then 1000 within about 3 seconds!!!
Can anyone shed any light on this at all before I speak to AMD?!?!?!
as I will need the chip to be doing what it can do!! no point in it running at 1GB all the time!!!
cheers peeps!!!
(I don't know TOOO much about PC's by the way)

Right...I've sorted it myself!!!! (and there was me saying i know nothing about computers!!!)
Chip settings are fine.
See below:
The way the HT works, is that the base clock is 200Mhz. The multiplier is 5,
so that equals 1000Mhz. It is capable of a simultaneous 1000Mhz up and
downstream, so the total combined speed is 2000Mhz.
It's using this Hypertransport thing that splits the up and down stream so
you double up the 1000Mhz.
I know mine is set to 200 x 5 = 1000 x2 = 2000Mhz

depending on motherboard, you should be able to adjust settings to a preset one...my motherboard has 'normal' 'optimal' 'performance' and aggressive' ....also you should update the bios to the latest one as i remember reading that some amd cpu's dont show the correct speed......my athlon 3000+ runs at the normal 2177 mhz but showed 1700 until i updated bios

keith that is wrong
HT = hyper threading and only applies to Intel CPU's not AMD ones
sounds like your motherboard is cheap and nasty
your FSB wants to be set to 333 and the multiplier set to 6
most decent motherboard have chip settings for ease
so you tell the mobo what cpu you have
ie xp2800 or xp3000 and it changes the settings accordingly

Im about to go through this myself ...
I got the dreaded "it wont work" call from my dad last night
What the rough prices on MOBO's and processors at the moment ? It dont need to be heavily specced just used for browsing the web etc

craig, keith is kinda right. and HT stuff is SIMILAR with the AMD northbidge stuff (which i find a bit complex tbh) you do indeed take the 200 then double this to 400 to get your 400 FSB :P (even tho theres no such thing as FSB anymore... fuk me its confusing
)
so 200 x 2 x 5
dunno if thats right for his chip tho, altho i dont think there is a 333 fsb/nb on the amd stuff? i thought they oly went upto 200 (400/800 respectively)

Msi boards are normally pretty good... as craig says you need the FSB to be set to 333 and multiplier to 6 this is PROPPER easy on an MSI board.. just go into the bios setup and change the FSB speed to 333 (or higher if it will allow) and adjust the multiplier accordingly.
MSI motherboards are arround £40+vat processors.. 2.8 cellery pro about £55+vat..
You will more than likely need a new case too cheap-o ones are arround 20+vat (inc power supply)
oh you will also need the newer style DDR ram if you are using old SD ram ATM
512Mb was about £45+vat last time i looked

Phil,
Cheers
I'm off to Scan in Bolton at lunchtime. It does (did) use the old SD ram, so would I be better off just getting an older MOBO to swap the bits over ? Dunno if they are still available. I really aint got a clue with this stuff
If anyone wants to point me to something on the scan website feel free

I dont know if they still make Motherboards that use old SD ram
if you go to www.cclonline.com then you can browe thru all the different components and even buy a 'barebones' system
