Default mountain bike brakes?

Im going to buy a bike to get a bit fitter but i have not been on one for about 10 years. Im going to be doing a bit of dirt and road riding. Since i last had a bike brakes have changed a bit from the old caliper type. I dont know which to go for either Disc brake setup or v-brakes?

Any body had and experience with these or can compare the 2?

Cheers

How much are you wanting to spend on a bike?

i have been looking at the coyote ht, coyote blue ridge and coyote Arkansas. They all vary from 160-250.

Most bikes now have discs now.

Beware of the cable ones as imo a good set of V's are better.

Have a look at www.chainreactioncycles.co.uk for some bikes.

At that price level, for a new bike, I'd look for V-brakes... the disc set up will be wank IMO.

slightly out of topic here but years ago i purchased the xtr f+r caliper setup , had a metal rod and cable with extra length pads ..........fook me is all i can say. They were lethal and caught everyone who had a go out! Me being the 1st person to go straight over ass over tit , immense braking power , i,ve not been involved for years but had a quick go of others with new decent stuff and nothing touches them imo.
I,d definately go with the advice above ^^

In my personal experience, I managed to get shimano deore v brakes to work amazingly well. I used to use them years ago on my old DMR and preferred them to hope hydraulic discs and they were a fraction of the price.

^^^^not sure if theyre still making them but xt paralel pulls were the brakes of choice for me when i used to ride trials, amazing control!

from personal experience stay the hell away from halfrauds-total junk that wont last more than 6 months.
for the kind of money your looking at spending your better off sticking with v-brakes.
also stay away from rear suspension as it will only soak up your preload when on the road.

Compared to a good set of discs, rim brakes are shit.....even magura's. Touch of damp or mud and they just dont work, and if you get pads aggressive enough to cut through it they wear out in 5 minutes.

However at your price point and probable usage the v brakes will be better than the cable disc unless you fall lucky with some avid or shimano ones, which i doubt.

Cheap disc brake bikes suffer with poor kit too as the cash is spent on the disc brakes and hubs.

Ha ha, made me chuckle that did.
I've recently bought a decent bike, it uses Shimano Discs front and rear and I wasn't overly impressed, but do weight 330 tons, no pounds!!
Trying to get some cossie 4 pots on there!!

i have avid jucy 3 hydraulic discs which id recomend if you get the chance but in your price range id go for simple cable discs tbh, & thers nowt wrong with halfords bikes just dont let them put it together for you.

At that price range, go for V's. Only Hydraulics are better! Avid or Formula are by far the best, with hope coming basically last they suffer from horrendous caliper flex, barely ever work, and have a tendancy to blow their pistons out. Everyone I know who's had hopes (alot I might add) have had problems with them having no power, or leaking, one of my mates even had his front brake blow a piston out at aston hill(no fun if you know how steep it is!) Hopes are 'all noise, no power' due to the noise most of them make! I even had a set of bottom end tektro hydro's that I used when I was skint that I prefered to hope, and they worked better!

Load of old bollocks IMO, I've used most models of hope out there over tha last 15 years. I used to do about 100 miles a week too so they had a hammering. All my mates have them too.

As reliable as an arga, if serviced and looked after as per the manufacturer spec

Hopes older stuff was better, the old 6pots were pretty good, but in the last few years it's turned to overpriced crap. Hope hubs are good, shame about the brakes.

I guess it depends on speccing the right brake for the usage

I use Mono Minis on my all day full susser and they're tiny single pots and are perfect, plently of power and feel and never let me down.

I wouldnt have used them when I was living in wales and hammering the big hills every other day.

Plus I can go to my local shop and get any spare part by the next day if I need one, say if i'm swapping bikes etc.

Not saying your wrong but in my experience they are pretty decent

What sort of riding will you be doing? How good are you on a bike? theres no point over spending if you carn't do what the bike is capable off.

Disks are better than rim brakes but at your budget your propabley looking at cable disks which are great if you wont to poddle about as are the v brakes tbh there is'nt alot in it at this price level
